For non-incorporated banking institutions, see private bank.
Banking services for very wealthy people
Private banking is banking, investment and other financial services provided by banks and financial institutions primarily serving high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs)—defined as those with very high levels of income or sizable assets. Private banking is a more exclusive subset of wealth management, geared toward exceptionally affluent clients. The term "private" refers to customer service rendered on a more personal basis than in mass-market retail banking, usually provided via dedicated bank advisers. At least until recently, it largely consisted of banking services (deposit taking and payments), discretionary asset management, brokerage, limited tax advisory services and some basic concierge-type services, offered by a single designated relationship manager.
Private banking is how banking originated. The first banks in Venice were focused on managing personal finance for wealthy families. Private banks came to be known as "private" to stand out from the retail banking and savings banks aimed at the new middle class. Traditionally, private banks were linked to families for several generations. They often advised and performed all financial and banking services for these families. Historically, private banking has developed in Europe (see the List of private banks). Some banks in Europe are known for managing the assets of some royal families. The assets of the Princely Family of Liechtenstein are managed by LGT Group (founded in 1920 and originally known as The Liechtenstein Global Trust). The assets of the Dutch royal family are managed by MeesPierson (founded in 1720).[1] The assets of the British Royal Family are managed by Coutts (founded in 1692).
Historically, private banking has been viewed as a very exclusive niche that only caters to HNWIs—specifically those with liquidity over $2 million, though it is now possible to open private banking accounts with as little as $250,000 for private investors. An institution's private banking division provides services such as wealth management, savings, inheritance, and tax planning for their clients. For private banking services, clients pay either based on the number of transactions, the annual portfolio performance or a "flat-fee", usually calculated as a yearly percentage of the total investment amount.[2]
"Private" also alludes to bank secrecy and minimizing taxes through careful allocation of assets, or by hiding assets from the taxing authorities. Swiss and certain offshore banks have been criticized for such cooperation with individuals practicing tax evasion. Although tax fraud is a criminal offense in Switzerland, tax evasion is only a civil offence, not requiring banks to notify taxing authorities.[3]
In Switzerland, there are many banks providing private banking services.[4] Switzerland has remained neutral since the Congress of Vienna in 1815, including through two World Wars. After World War I, the former nobles of Austro-Hungarian Empire moved their assets to Switzerland for fear of confiscation by new governments.[5] During World War II, many wealthy people, including Jewish families and institutions, moved their assets into Switzerland to protect them from Nazi Germany. However, this transfer of wealth into Switzerland had mixed and controversial results, as beneficiaries had difficulties retrieving their assets after the war.[6] After World War II, in eastern Europe, assets were again moved into Switzerland for fear of confiscation by communist governments.
Today, Switzerland remains the largest offshore center, with about 27 percent ($2.0 trillion) of global offshore wealth in 2009, according to Boston Consulting Group.[7] Offshore wealth is defined as assets booked in a country where the investor has no legal residence or tax domicile.
In England, private banks were established in the 17th century, in parallel with the development of agriculture, managing the assets of the royal family, nobility and the landed gentry.
The United States has one of the largest private banking systems in the world, in part due to the 3.1 million HNWIs accounting for 28.6% of the global HNWIs population in 2010, according to the co-research of Capgemini and Merrill Lynch[citation needed]. Some American banks that specialize in private banking date back to the 19th century, such as U.S. Trust (founded in 1853) and Northern Trust (founded in 1889).
The internationalization of the economy, technological developments such as the Internet and mobile phones ensure that banks have to innovate their value proposition and look for new markets. For example, the growth of HNWIs is low in traditional private banking markets like Europe, compared to Asia where the number of millionaires has grown to 3.6 million.[8]
Banks also provide a sampling of the private banking services at a lower price point than traditional private banking. These are called premium banking or priority banking services. They are meant for mass-affluent customers. The accounts do not generate as much revenue as traditional private banking, but given the number of customers, they amount to a sizeable revenue to the bank. The products offered to premium banking customers are the same as that for private banking customers with the exception that they do not include hedge funds or facilities to manage one's own business accounts. In short, it is wealth management at a much smaller scale.
In 2016, Credit Suisse and UBS replaced the word "private banking" with wealth management; private banking has faced reputational risk as an area for tax avoidance or even tax aversion.[9]
In 2016, JP Morgan began requiring a minimum of $10 million in assets to qualify for their private banking, with those with less being moved into their Private Client Direct program.[10]

Most private banks define their value proposition along one or two dimensions, and meet the basic needs across others. Some of the dimensions of value proposition of a private bank are parent brand, one-bank approach, unbiased advice, strong research and advisory team and unified platform. Many banks leverage the "parent brand" to gain a client’s trust and confidence. These banks have a strong presence across the globe and present private bank offerings as a part of the parent group. "One Bank approach" is where private banks offer an integrated proposition to meet clients personal and business needs. Since private banking concerns understanding a client’s need and risk appetite, and tailoring the solution accordingly, few banks define their value proposition along this dimension. Most modern private banks follow an open product platform, and hence claim their advice is unbiased. They believe there is no incentive to push proprietary products, and the client gets the best of what they offer. A few banks claim to have a "strong advisory team" that reflects in the products they offer the client. A couple of banks also define their value proposition on their unified platform, their ability to comply with all regulations, yet serve the client without restrictions.
Open architecture product platform is where a private bank distributes all the third party products and is not restricted to selling only its proprietary products. Closed architecture product platform is where the bank sells only its proprietary products and does not entertain any third party product. These days the needs of the clients are so diverse that it is practically impossible for a bank to cater to those needs by its proprietary products alone. Clients today demand the best of breed products and most banks have to follow an open architecture product platform where they distribute products of other banks to their clients in return for commission. Products offered to private banking clients include equities, fixed-income securities, structured products, foreign exchange, commodities, deposits and real-estate investments.[13]
Different banks charge their clients in different ways. There are banks that follow the transactional model where the client is not charged any advisory fee at all. The banks thrive totally on the commissions they get by distributing third party products. There are other private banks that follow a hybrid model. In this model, the bank charges a fixed fee for certain products and advisory fee for the rest. Some of the other banks are totally advisory driven and charge the clients a percentage of AUM (e.g. 0.75% of entire AUM). A few banks offer both a transactional model and an advisory model. The clients choose what suits them. A recent industry trend is towards the advisory fee model, because margins on commissions may go down in the future.
Main article: Lead generation
Lead generation is a vital part of the private banking business. Various banks go about in different ways to acquire new clients. While some banks rely heavily on their wholesale banking referrals there are a few others that have strong tie-ups with their retail and corporate banking divisions. Most banks do have a revenue sharing mechanism in place within divisions. It is either a onetime charge to the division or an annuity that the division gets for a client referral. Many banks believe that the primary source of leads must be client referrals. A client would refer his/her friends when he/she is satisfied with the service provided by the private bank. Generating a good number of leads through client referrals shows the good health of the private bank.
Wells Fargo (WFC) - Get Wells Fargo & Company Report on Friday posted fourth-quarter earnings that handily beat analysts’ forecasts amid broader improvement in the economy and net reserves.
The San Francisco-based bank reported net income of $5.8 billion, or $1.38 a share, for the fourth quarter of 2021, vs. $3.1 billion, or 66 cents a share, in the comparable year-earlier quarter. Analysts polled by FactSet had been looking for earnings of $1.11 cents a share.
Revenue came in at $20.86 billion, up from $18.49 billion in fourth quarter of 2020. Analysts had been expecting revenue of $18.78 billion. Net interest income declined 1% to $9.3 billion while non-interest income jumped 27% to $11.6 billion, driven in part by strong results in the company's venture capital and private equity businesses.
Improvement in the broader economy, net reserve releases, and strong credit quality helped bolster Wells Fargo's bottom line, the bank said.
At the same time, provision for credit losses in fourth quarter 2021 included an $875 million decrease in the allowance for credit losses "due to continued improvements in the economic environment, as well as a decrease in net charge-offs," Wells Fargo said.
CEO Charlie Scharf struck a cautious tone, noting in a statement that the changes Wells Fargo has made to streamline its business through the pandemic as well as continued strong economic growth prospects "make us feel good about how we are positioned entering 2022."
"But we also remain cognizant that we still have a multi-year effort to satisfy our regulatory requirements – with setbacks likely to continue along the way – and we continue our work to put exposures related to our historical practices behind us,” Scharf said.
Wells Fargo last fall agreed to pay $37 million to settle claims that it overcharged over 700 commercial customers that used its foreign exchange services, actions the bank itself called “unacceptable.”
Specifically, Wells Fargo allegedly overcharged 771 businesses on foreign-exchange transactions from 2010 through 2017, according to a U.S. Justice Department lawsuit and settlement filed in federal court in New York.
At last check, shares of Wells Fargo were up 2.68% at $57.50 in premarket trading. The stock is up more than 61% over the past 12 months.

Henny “take my wife … please” Youngman would be proud of the deal Credit Suisse just made to offload what is left of its U.S. private bank on Wells Fargo.
Under the arrangement disclosed today, Credit Suisse Group AG gives Wells Fargo the exclusive right to rampage its cadre of wealth managers with the idea of situating willing Credit Suisse brokers by goldman sachs online savings account rate Zurich-based firm informed employees of Credit Suisse Private Banking in a memo, obtained by Reuters’ Jed Horowitz, saying that wells fargo private bank qualifications unit could not “sustainably” compete without being acquired or bolstered with investment — neither of which eventuality was apparently forthcoming.
For Credit Suisse, the deal seems to allow it to eke out a few dollars and show its employees some good faith. For Wells Fargo, it is a shot to bolster its presence in the ultrahigh-net-worth market. See: Wells Fargo targets tempting but treacherous UHNW market with Abbot Downing launch.

Wells Fargo’s last big UHNW move was in 2012 when it combined Wells’ Lowry Hill Investment Advisors Inc., a legacy private-asset-management firm in Minneapolis dating back to the 1986 spinout of Norwest Bank’s trust unit, and Wells Fargo Family Wealth, itself a legacy successor to Wachovia’s prestigious Calibre family office, which also targeted ultrawealthy families. Despite the Abbott Downing edge that Wells brings, Joseph J Piazza, chairman and CEO of Robertson Stephens LLC, says this poaching deal seems unlikely to succeed.
“I think it will quickly devolve into a Barclays experience,” he said when contacted in San Francisco today. “Many advisors will not wait around for the deal to close and just leave. Others will sit tight to see what happens. If Wells does not offer an attractive retention package, do not get in the way of the stampede.”
On the contrary, says David Carroll, head of Wealth and Investment Management for Wells Fargo & Co., his firm has the chops to make a home for these elite brokers.
“Today, Wells Fargo operates the third-largest brokerage and is the fourth-largest wealth management provider in the U.S.,” he said in a release “Our growth is fueled by our unwavering commitment to do what’s best for our clients, which we believe will be attractive to these talented relationship managers. We look forward to welcoming U.S. Private Banking relationship managers from Credit Suisse and are committed to strengthening their home remedies for migraine headache in hindi with their clients.”
The deal may in fact have merit, according to John Furey, principal of Advisor Growth Strategies of Phoenix, Ariz., who says he has heard “rumblings” of this deal coming for weeks.
“I like this deal as they are essentially transitioning advisors with an incentive and I would imagine Credit Suisse gets some consideration if they have transition success,” he wrote in an email. “It’s a good deal for advisors too as they are free to go where they wish.”
Jeff Spears, CEO of Sanctuary Wealth Services says that indeed the rumblings have lasted long enough that the more poachable Credit Suisse advisors have already moved on.
“The 200 remaining advisors are the ones who couldn’t find another firm that would hire them so they waited around to see who bought the firm and what retention deal they offered,” he says. See: Pershing, Dynasty and Envestnet gang-tackle Credit Suisse and jolt loose $1 billion duo.
Rob Shafir, head of private banking and wealth management and CEO of the Americas region for Credit Suisse, weighed in as well in the statement: “Credit Suisse remains committed to continuing to provide ultrahigh-net-worth U.S. clients with a strong investment banking and asset management institutional offering.”
John Furey: Global banks are coming
to the conclusion that the model
is broken and divesting is the
best alternative.
One way that Wells can make Credit Suisse advisors comfortable is with Credit Suisse investment banking services: Wells Fargo and Credit Suisse expect to strategically expand their relationship to make additional Credit Suisse Investment Banking and Asset Management offerings available to the Wells Fargo distribution network.
But with firms like Barclays and Credit Suisse unilaterally disarming themselves of retail brokerage forces, there is an obvious conclusion to draw, according to Furey.
“Global banks are coming to the conclusion that the model is broken florida edd contact number divesting is the best alternative.”
Credit Suisse yesterday reported a 31% decline in pretax profit at its private banking and wealth management unit.
Though Credit Suisse came through the 2008-2009 banking crisis relatively unscathed, Germany, Brazil, and the United States, from 2008 to 2012, began investigations into the people’s use of Credit Suisse accounts to evade taxes. In May 2014, the company pleaded guilty and agreed to pay $2.6 billion in fines. See: A Swiss RIA advisor reports on a Zurich event aimed at shaping, saving Swiss wealth management in the wake of purging American clients.
Credit Suisse can presumably absorb these blows given that its revenues, for instance, in 2013 were more than $25 billion with about $2.3 billion falling to the bottom line. The bank employs about 45,000 globally.

JPMorgan Chase's culture is shifting when it comes to inclusivity, hiring practices and acceptance of people who think differently. It's Autism Inclusion Month at the firm, and we're taking a look at the critical and important contributions of people who are neurodiverse.
With us today is the Global Head of Autism at Work, Anthony Pacilio, and JPMorgan Chase's software and performance engineer Jesse Collins. Thank you both for being here today.
ANTHONY PACILIO:
Thank you. Appreciate it.
JESSE COLLINS:
Thank you for having us.
CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:
Anthony, let's start with you. Why is a program like Autism at Work so critical? And how has the program influenced productivity wells fargo private bank qualifications inclusivity at the firm?
ANHTONY PACILIO:
Yeah, great question. So when we started this program, it was out of business necessity. We were looking for a different type of talent. And at that time, we just didn't have enough of the talent in the IT space. So what happened was we understood that folks on the spectrum were knocking it out of the park in other companies and corporations. And so we decided to bring that here to JPMorgan Chase.
We've gone from four folks in the program in 2015 to over 225 today, in nine countries, in 40 different job roles. Some of the job roles that we have, folks on the spectrum are outperforming 90% to 140% of their peers and colleagues. So that speaks volume to the breadth of talent that we're bringing in.
CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:
Absolutely. And Jesse, you were diagnosed with autism at age 25. And you made the complete career shift from social work to the work you're doing today at JPMorgan Chase. How did a program like Autism at Work help make that career change?
JESSE COLLINS:
Yeah, Christina, I was diagnosed with autism at age 25. Growing up, I struggled with social cues and understanding facial expressions. And it became more apparent as I got older that my brain just simply assessed information and situations differently than others.
While my wife and I were dating, we had a conversation one night about the possibility of me being on the autism spectrum. And she encouraged me further to talk to my doctor, which ultimately led to my diagnosis. 1st gen cummins craigslist diagnosis simply gave us more language and tools to help us navigate our lives together.
And I'm happy to share that we've been married now for almost three years and expecting a daughter, Zofia Rose, in May. Through our conversations after my diagnosis, we found the Autism at Work program. The program gave me access to the training and guidance I needed to shift careers and, most importantly, provided me with the necessary support and encouragement.
Too often, being different obx vacation rentals airbnb seen as something bad or that should be hidden. But that couldn't be more wrong. Being different is a good thing. And the Autism at Work program has helped myself at J.P. Morgan recognize that neurodiversity is a true asset and something that should be celebrated.
CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:
That's such an important message. And by the way, congratulations to you and your wife and growing family. That's so exciting.
JESSE COLLINS:
Thank you.
CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:
Anthony, you've mentioned that people who are part of the program can bring their full selves to work. How have you seen the corporate culture change because of the program?
ANTHONY PACILIO:
Yeah. I mean, listen, 80% of the folks who are on the spectrum are unemployed or underemployed. So this is giving them the opportunity to come in, bring their whole selves to work, as you said, victorias secret credit card login kind of take the mask off that they might've had to utilize their entire life.
The empathy has increased. And I think the social awareness, obviously, has increased. And I think when you bring somebody in who's on the spectrum or thinks differently or has a cognitive difference, I think when you bring those folks on your team, it kind of sets you apart because now you're looking at things in a totally different light. And then people get comfortable.
And one of the misconceptions is folks on the spectrum are not social. I can tell you from firsthand experience — Jesse's a prime example of that — that is not the case. We have people leading team meetings and scrum meetings and doing different things in operations areas.
Managers are also learning different techniques and ways that they're able to communicate with their teams. It's because they're learning with somebody who's on the spectrum that there's different ways to do that.
And if we take an example of somebody who’s getting performance feedback and it's not sinking in, we try a different technique to do that. Whether it's bringing in an advocate to help out or just trying a different methodology via Skype or chat or whatever that may be. So it's actually increasing how we talk to colleagues who are neurotypical as well.
The culture shift that we have now at JPMorgan Chase because of the program is absolutely unbelievable. We have many other companies and corporations asking us how we did the program. And we said we started small, and now we're scaling it to where it is one of the leading ones in the world.
CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:
And, Jesse, back over to you. What advice would you give other companies who are looking to hire people who are neurodiverse? And what can people do to embrace the neurodiverse culture even more?
JESSE COLLINS:
Yeah. If you're looking to increase your neurodiversity, I think it's important to set up the programs that go beyond recruitment. It's important to set up training programs similar to how Autism at Work has established them for JPMorgan Chase. That informs colleagues and managers on how they can reframe their practices to be more inclusive. And alleviates the burden off of the individual to have to disclose and educate others on their diagnosis, which can be really difficult and anxiety-provoking.
Additionally, it's important to address the physical work environment too. When we were in the office and we had office spaces, like alternative office seating and lower lighting and designated wells fargo private bank qualifications zones, those things can be really helpful to somebody who has sensory sensitivities like myself.
In general, creating a work environment that celebrates differences in thought, hosting conversations about neurodiversity — not only during Autism Inclusion Month but throughout the year — and being more conscious of practices and languages that may be unintentionally exclusive are ways that we can all build a more diverse and inclusive work environment.
CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:
Well, thank you Jesse, thank you Anthony, so much for sharing your story and a little bit more about this critical program. Appreciate your time.
ANTHONY PACILIO:
Thank you.
JESSE COLLINS:
Thank you.
