Why Wells Fargo Is Leaving the Midwest Behind

Wells Fargo(NYSE:WFC) customers who live in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio will soon see a new logo on their monthly statements. The bank decided to cut and run from retail branch banking in these three states in an effort to cull lower-performing branches from its network.

In a win-win deal, deposit-starved Flagstar Bancorp(NYSE:FBC) will take Wells Fargo's underperforming branches off of its hands -- and pay a premium to do it.

    Gutting from the middle

Some history goes a long way to explain why Wells Fargo doesn't see the Midwest as core to its business. The bank as we know it today is really the combination of the San Francisco-based Wells Fargo, which dominated in the American West, and Wachovia, a Charlotte-based bank that dominated in the American East.

Map of Wells Fargo's deposit market share

Data source: Wells Fargo presentation. Map by author.

When Wells Fargo agreed to acquire Wachovia in 2008, it paired a massive West Coast branch network with a massive East Coast network. But the states that sat in between were largely lost in the middle, and even today, Wells Fargo hasn't really penetrated Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio the same way it has states on the coasts.

    Subscale branches

Wells Fargo isn't losing much by shedding a handful of Midwestern branches. The 52 branches the bank is selling had just $2.3 billion in deposits, or about $44 million of deposits per branch. That compares poorly to the average U.S. bank branch, which had $63 million in deposits, according to the Bank Administration Institute.

Put another way, these branches collectively made up about 1% of Wells Fargo's branch network but generated less than 0.2% of its deposits. The branches are a big expense with little benefit.

But one bank's liability can be another's asset. Flagstar Bancorp desperately needs deposits to help fund its loan portfolio. At the end of the last quarter, Flagstar had $13 billion in net loans but only $10 billion in deposits.

By acquiring $2.3 billion of deposits from Wells Fargo, Flagstar can replace high-cost funding with low-cost deposits while taking on some incremental operating expenses. It expects the transaction will be "modestly accretive" to its earnings per share in 2019, presumably because what it saves in interest expense will exceed what it pays to keep the branches open and operating.

    Getting paid to eliminate expenses

In the low interest rate environment following the financial crisis, the ability to source deposits meant very little. But as interest rates rise from historic lows, banks that are hungry for low-cost liabilities are willing to pay a premium to buy deposits from banks eager to shed them.

Flagstar Bank said it would pay an effective deposit premium of 7% to acquire the branches from Wells Fargo, which implies it will pay about $161 million for the branches. In effect, Wells Fargo is getting rid of some of its least productive branches, and getting paid to do it. Flagstar is getting deposits it needs at a relatively low cost. Everyone wins.

Wells Fargo’s $5.8 Billion Profit In 4th Quarter Easily Tops Expectations

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Wells Fargo easily beat Wall Street expectations for the fourth quarter with interest rates beginning to take off, likely another boost for the nation’s largest mortgage lender going forward.

The San Francisco bank earned $5.8 billion, or $1.38 per share, handily surpassing the $1.11 industry analysts were expecting, according to a survey by the data firm FactSet. Wells took in $20.86 billion in sales in the quarter, also topping Wall Street projections of $18.8 billion. The bank had revenue of $18.49 billion in the same quarter last year.

For the full year, Wells collected $21.5 billion in profit, or $4.95 per share. Sales for 2021 came in at $78.49 billion, a 5% increase over 2020, when the bank reported revenue of $74.26 billion. Wells said its position improved last year partly due its ability to reduce expenses while deposits grew as the economy bounced back from the coronavirus downturn of the 2020.

Wells reported $9.26 billion in net interest income in the period, down slightly from last year, but expected to bounce back this year with rates on long-term loans seem destined to rise quickly. The Federal Reserve announced last month that it would begin dialing back its monthly bond purchases — which are intended to lower long-term rates — to slow accelerating inflation. Even with the expected three or four rate increases in 2022, the Fed’s benchmark rate would still be historically low at around 1%.

Average long-term U.S. mortgage rates jumped again this past week to 3.45%, their highest level since March 2020, just as the coronavirus pandemic was breaking in the U.S. Economists expect them to rise further as the Fed tightens credit, meaning more profits for banks, especially Wells, which depends heavily on mortgages.

The company said it decreased the amount of money it held aside for credit losses by $875 million. Banks set aside tens of billions of dollars to guard against customer defaults early in the pandemic; some of those billions are now being moved back onto the positive side of their balance sheets.

Wells is still trying to exit the strict federal guidelines that sets its asset cap just under $2 billion, hindering its ability to grow.

The Federal Reserve capped the size of Wells Fargo’s assets in 2018 after a series of scandals, most notably the uncovering of millions of fake checking accounts its employees opened to meet sales quotas.

Wells Fargo recently announced that it will offer ways for its customers to limit overdraft-related fees.

The bank, which has locations in Berks County, said in a press release that these offerings, which include earlier access to direct deposits, a 24-hour grace period before incurring any overdraft fees, the elimination of several fees, and a new, short-term loan, build on actions the company has taken over the past several years to improve customer experience.

“Core to Wells Fargo’s evolution is making sure we stay focused on our customers, first and foremost,” said Mary Mack, CEO of Wells Fargo Consumer and Small Business Banking, in a statement. “The enhancements we’re announcing today add to changes we’ve made previously and give our customers more choice and flexibility in meeting their needs.”

Wells Fargo said it is building on two services that it introduced in recent years. Clear Access Banking, which was in September 2020, is a consumer bank account that charges no overdraft fees. It now has over 1.1 million customers. Overdraft Rewind, which started in 2017, automatically “rewinds” overdraft fees when a covering direct deposit is received by the next morning. Wells Fargo also sends more than 1.3 million balance alerts every day to help customers avoid overdrafts.

The bank said it will eliminate transfer fees for customers enrolled in Overdraft Protection by the end of the first quarter if they use funds from a linked account.

Non-sufficient funds fees will also be eliminated by the end of the first quarter. Customers will no longer pay a returned item fee if Wells Fargo returns a check or electronic transaction unpaid because the customer does not have enough available funds in the deposit account to cover the payment.

Also, customers who receive eligible direct deposits will be able to access funds up to two days earlier than scheduled, minimizing the potential to incur overdrafts. The new service is expected to be available in the third quarter.

Customers who overdraw their deposit account will have 24 hours to cover the overdraft before incurring an overdraft fee. This is expected to be offered in the third quarter. Together with early access to direct deposit, the 24-hour grace period expands and replaces the Overdraft Rewind service.

Wells Fargo will offer qualifying customers a new, short-term loan of up to $500. The loan and an upfront flat fee will be repaid through monthly installments. This new product is expected to be offered by the end of 2022.

Banks opening hours on Martin Luther King Jr Day: Chase, Wells Fargo, Citibank

Monday 17 January, or Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday, meaning that the central bank, the Federal Reserve won’t be open, therefore national banks won’t be either. But most ATM’s will still be working.

It’s important to remember that regardless of whether or not your bank is open, banking transactions will not be processed on this day.

What banking transactions can I make on MLK Day 2022?

Even if your bank branch is closed on Monday 17 January, there are a variety of transactions that you can still take care of. Many ATMs accept deposits, and you can always withdrawal cash or check balances at ATMs. As long as your preferred ATM isn’t locked inside the building, you may still be able to handle those tasks.

Also online banking services will remain accessible. For instance you can deposit a check through your bank’s mobile app and schedule bill-paying services, transfers and more. However, most of these services may not fully process until the business day or two after the holiday.

Making a deposit and recurring payments on MLK Day 2022

If you made a deposit in-branch last week, due to MLK day it could take up to six days including the holiday and weekends, for your deposit to become available. If your bank is open, you can still make the deposit on MLK Day, but the transaction will not be processed until the day after.

In general, recurring payments that occur on a weekend or federal holiday should have been scheduled for the last business day prior to the weekend or federal holiday. The cut-off times for processing deposits and payments before a federal holiday vary between banks and even among the different branches, so it’s best to contact yours directly if you’re unsure.

National banks closed on Martin Luther King Day 2022

    • Bank of America: Closed
    • Chase: Closed
    • Wells Fargo: Closed
    • Citibank: Closed
    • U.S. Bank: Closed
    • Capital One: Closed
    • PNC Bank: Closed
    • TD Bank: Closed
    • BB&T: Closed
    • SunTrust: Closed (excluding in-store locations)

Other federal bank holidays observed in 2022

    • Washington's Birthday
    • Memorial Day
    • Independence Day
    • Labor Day
    • Columbus Day
    • Veterans Day
    • Thanksgiving Day
    • Christmas Day

Why is Martin Luther King Day celebrated?

Martin Luther King was born in 1929 into a country divided by racial segregation in many states. He was the son of early civil rights activist Martin Luther King Sr., and participated in protest movements from a young age.

He grew to national prominence in 1955 when he led the Montgomery bus boycott after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus for a white man. He made perhaps the single most famous speech in modern history in 1963 in declaring; “I Have a Dream”, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington.

MLK Day is one of only two official federal holidays to take place on someone’s birthday, with the other being the observance of George Washington’s birthday. King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee and was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.

Martin Luther King Day began in some cities and states as early as 1971, but it wasn’t until 1986 that President Ronald Reagan made it a federal holiday.

Though most federal buildings like post offices and public libraries will be closed on MLK Day 2021, many private businesses choose to stay open every year. Many nationwide stores are planning to stay open.

National Parks are offering free entry this Martin Luther King Jr Day.

Wells Fargo isn't losing much wells fargo branch shedding a handful of Midwestern branches.

    Wells Fargo branch

But as interest rates rise from historic lows, banks that are hungry for low-cost liabilities are willing www walmart one com pay a premium to buy deposits from banks eager to shed them.

Flagstar Bank said it would pay an effective deposit premium wells fargo branch 7% to acquire the branches from Wells Fargo, which implies it will pay about $161 million for the branches. In effect, Wells Fargo is getting rid of some of its least productive branches, and getting paid to do it. Cash app cash card activation is getting deposits it needs at a relatively low cost. Everyone wins.

Together with early access to direct deposit, the 24-hour grace period expands and replaces the Overdraft Rewind san jose state university admissions Fargo will offer qualifying customers a new, short-term loan of up to $500. The loan and an upfront flat fee will be repaid through monthly installments. This new product is expected to be offered by the end of 2022.

Wells Fargo beats profit estimates on uptick in loan demand, cost cuts

Jan 14 (Reuters) - Wells Fargo & Co on Friday beat analysts' estimates for fourth-quarter profit as a rebound in U.S. economic growth encouraged more customers to take loans and the bank kept a tight lid on costs.

The bank's shares were up 3.2% in afternoon trade on Friday and have gained 20% since the start of the year. read more

The other lever Wells pulled to boost its top line was expenses. Scharf has made cost cuts a cornerstone of his turnaround plan, targeting $10 billion in savings annually over the long term.

Headcount across the company fell by more bangor weather warning 7% over last year to 249,000 employees from 269,000, as the bank let go of 20% of managers who had only a few direct reports and 40% of non-engineering technology workers.

Wells Fargo closed 270 branches and reduced branch staffing in some locations because overall teller transactions are down 30% from pre-pandemic levels, executives said.

With fewer workers in offices, the bank offloaded 7% of its office space real estate portfolio in 2021 and plans to cut it by another 5% this year.

And Scharf said they are nowhere near done.

"We still have a multi-year effort to satisfy our regulatory requirements – with setbacks likely to continue along the way – and we continue our work to put exposures related to our historical practices behind us," Scharf said.

Still, Chief Financial Officer Mike Santomassimo said Wells could see as much as an 8% increase in net interest income this year over 2021 if projections on loan growth and the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes hold.
