    Verizon customer service is top notch

    I’ve only been with Verizon for one month and they have been on top of every question or concern I have with my new phone and my new service. They are a little more expensive then most basic phone plans but I’d rather pay a little extra to have the wonderful customer service that I have experienced so far. I’m south of DFW about 20 minutes and cell service isn’t as good as AT&T as of yet but city of mankato phone number that will change because most of the people I know are switching from AT&T just because the customer service alone. If we could just get a little better signal in the area I would be 110% positive this is the only phone service anyone would need and let AT&T move out. AT&T is cheaper but you get what you pay for and an extra $20-$30 a month is well worth having representatives from Verizon there to help you then AT&T is price gouging on everything there name is attached to and offer you no support. Not trying to bash AT&T but the facts are the facts. Thanks Verizon for giving us another quality option in the DFW area

    Absolutely the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. I give it 0 stars. I’ve been a longloyalupstanding customer with Verizon for many yearsand at the beginning of 2020, I discovered I was being overchargedand then the pandemic set in. I could not reach a customer rep for months. When I didI was told I wasn’t switched to the new plan and was overpaying by at least $100- for months. I barely make any money as it is. I was also informed that Verizon cares about their customers and they “ understand” we’ve fallen on hard timesbut that the offer to help with plans and payments was expired ? I didn’t even know about this offer ? No one told me until it was too late ? The pandemic is still goinglast I’d heard. Gee - thanks. Great caring for your customers ! After making a payment arrangement and sticking to itI recently learned it wasn’t being held up on Verizon’s end and I was being charged over 100 more than initially agreed uponand this was following a payment I just made ? Then I was informed I was paying convenience fees ( which I was told I wasn’t ) and then late fees because of late payments ? I wasn’t late !! This is absurd and I can’t get a customer representative who can actually help me and resolve this in a fair and amicable way ! This is an utter disgrace ! I look forward to leaving this company. It’s a shame. They USED to be great .

    Digital Customer Support

    Digital chat and support is fine for many routine matters but there needs to be a better way to handle complicated questions and complaints. I have a 55+ Unlimited plan and got a new iPhone mini and wanted to add 5G and was told it would cost $25, but because this drequired a plan change it cost more than $100. I needed someone to explain this to me and the digital system did not provide this. I should be able to say representative and get someone. Instead I had to go to a Verizon store where a very nice and helpful person explained what happened. I told her I planned to write a letter to corporate headquarters and she suggested I call customer support. After a long roundabout with your digital system that gave no response to my prompt of Computer complaint or 55+ Unlimited but just offered the plans I could change to which did not include 55+ Unlimited. Finally I was prompted to schedule a call. Why wasn’t that suggested to me sooner. So I spent 3 hours to go to the store and return and call digital until I finally got an outstanding employee on the phone who explained the escalation system and resolved the situation in 15 minutes. By the way as a senior on a fixed income I would be forced to switch to a discount source without your 55+ Unlimited. That plan is a real boon for seniors. You should bring it back.

    In the past few months, I've used very, very little cellular data. Yet my family has paid around $200 per month for our five-member unlimited-data family plan on AT&T. That seems . silly, to put it nicely. If you've thought the same, well, you have a few options.

    First, you can suspend your phone service. It lets the carrier hold onto your phone number and account, and while you still pay a small monthly fee, it's a way to save a little money month to month. In this climate, every dollar counts. The downside? You lose cellular data connectivity, and you cannot make or receive phone calls or texts.

    But your phone will be able to connect to Wi-Fi networks, like the one you might have in your home, allowing you to use almost all your usual apps. To get around the SMS and calling issue, you could use an instant-messaging app like iMessage or WhatsApp as well as audio- or video-calling apps like FaceTime and Google Duo over Wi-Fi. For less-drastic options, we have a few alternative and affordable carriers for you to consider.

    Suspending Service vs. Shutting off Data

    We have instructions below on how to suspend your data plan if you're on one of the major US networks. If you use another carrier, like US Cellular, check the company's support pages (or ask a customer representative) if there's a way to suspend your service.

    Most carriers also have an option to shut off data to one of your phone lines on the account. That is not the same as suspending service. By shutting off data, you'll still be charged your plan's monthly rate. It's more a measure for when you want to stop your kid from watching too much Riverdale.

    Suspending service means your phone will no longer connect to your carrier's network, and you cannot make any calls or send texts. Your contract and upgrade eligibility dates will be extended for the length of time your service is suspended.

The carrier says the capability to suspend service is available for AT&T Mobile Share and Unlimited postpaid wireless customers. Head to this website to suspend service. You'll need to choose a reason, likely Vacation or Other Reason. Follow the prompts. Do not block your device. (Do that only if it was stolen.)

    The carrier doesn't specify this anywhere on its site, but you will still be billed for any device payments you owe. You will be charged a reduced rate of $10 per month, but this is not necessarily guaranteed. Plus, service and billing will resume as normal after six months. You're limited to this option once a year, and your upgrade eligibility dates will be pushed out however long your line was suspended.

    Thankfully, AT&T has a specific option for folks struggling to pay bills during the pandemic. You can submit a waiver for late fees and overage charges, but the deadline is June 30. You can www walmart one com out more details here.

    For T-Mobile Subscribers

    T-Mobile lets you suspend a line on your account (if you're the primary account holder) twice in a 12-month period for up to 90 days each.     Sprint doesn't have a lot of information on its website about suspending service. After searching the app and website to no avail, I asked a customer representative (and a spokesperson) how to suspend service and was told that it's not possible to do it online. You'll need to talk to a customer representative. There will be a reduced monthly fee when you suspend service, but exactly what it is will depend on your plan.

    Sprint and T-Mobile have merged, and the Sprint branding is fading away soon, so there's a good chance the T-Mobile instructions will work for existing Sprint subscribers in the not-too-distant future.

    Consider a Cheaper Network

    If suspending service doesn't sound right for you, it might be a good time to switch carriers. Below are a few options we like. Remember, when switching carriers you can always port your existing cellphone number.

    • Google Fi: Google charges you $20 per line and $10 per gigabyte (that includes unlimited talk and text). You get charged for the data you use, so if you use only 1 GB in a month, your bill will be $30. Best of all, you can pause service and resume it whenever you want. There's also Bill Protection, so after you use 6 GB, you won't get charged more. That means the max your bill will hit is $80 on a single line. The app is very easy to use, you get access to T-Mobile's network (and other networks if you have a Fi-supported phone), as well as the same data rate abroad.

    • Mint Mobile: This provider has three- six- and 12-month plans. Whichever range you pick, you can decide on one of three data buckets (3 GB, 8 GB, or 12 GB per month). It includes unlimited talk and text, mobile hot spot, and you'll need to bring your own unlocked phone. It uses T-Mobile's LTE network. The most affordable option gets you 3 gigabytes of data per month for three months, all for $45. If you stick with the same plan after the first three months, you'll be charged the regular three-month rate for that data allotment, which is $75 total. Still, that's six months of data for $120.

    • Visible: Visible is a sub-brand under Verizon, and it has one plan: $40 per month for unlimited data, talk, and text. You can bring your own phone or buy one from Visible. The service piggybacks off Verizon's 4G LTE network, and mobile hot spot access for your laptop or another device is included, but speeds are capped at 5 Mbps. Visible's data plan was originally capped to 5 Mbps as well, but since mid-2019, the cap was removed for a "limited time" and hasn't yet returned.

    • Ting: Ting is very customizable and affordable. You start by choosing the number of lines you need (1 line is $6), then a certain number of talk minutes and texts (choose no usage if you barely call or text people). Remember, using internet services like Facebook Messenger or FaceTime won't count toward your calling and texting limits. And then you choose your data allotment, ranging from no usage to more than 2 gigabytes.     Q: I have a fraudulent charge on my bill from Verizon Wireless for an international call I never made. I called Verizon’s customer-service department, which put me on hold to consult with its fraud department. A representative claimed that I had called Jamaica and talked for 121 minutes.
    I told her that it could not be true. I’m 75 years old and am usually in bed by the time that call was supposedly made.
    My usual phone bill is $123. This one is $415. I want all associated costs for this call dropped. I pay my bill automatically through my credit card, and I didn’t discover the charge until I received my credit card bill. — Bernice Lu, Kula, Hawaii

    A: You shouldn’t have to pay for a call you didn’t make. Verizon Wireless says you made the call; you say you didn’t. That’s a difficult “she said/he said” kind of situation. I’m sure the cellular carrier’s records show a call made from your account to Jamaica, but I’m equally sure that you didn’t call anyone in Jamaica.
    So what to do? First, let’s talk about the price of a 121-minute call to Jamaica on your cellphone. The standard pay-per-minute rate to call Jamaica from the United States without a calling plan is $1.99 per minute. That comes to about $240. You say there were other “associated” costs with the call that brought your total to $291.
    Is that rate reasonable? I leave that to you and my readers to decide, but I think I know the answer. Now, you could have reduced that rate by signing up for a monthly call plan. But why would you if you never call Jamaica?
    There ought to be a way to disable your ability to make an international long-distance call from your cellphone, but as far as I can tell, there isn’t. (You can read about how Verizon’s international calls work on its website: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/international-long-distance-faqs/.) It feels like with these high rates, and your inability to block calls, your phone is a money trap, waiting for you to butt-dial China.
    Another way to ensure that no one uses your phone is to lock it down. Use a security code or a fingerprint to guarantee that only you can use the device. If you have grandkids running around the house, you wouldn’t want one of them to prank call someone in the Caribbean.
    I know what I’m talking about. I have three kids, and they are always trying to gain access to my phone. It’s not that difficult if you use a short security code to unlock your smartphone.
    To solve this problem, you want to put it in writing. Although the company strongly prefers a phone call, I would resist the temptation. Verizon records its phone calls for “quality” assurance, but you don’t have access to the recordings, which puts you at a disadvantage. There’s no record of the content of your call. Instead, I would initiate a live chat (https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/contact-us/. Having something in writing is extremely helpful. If you don’t get anywhere, you can always appeal your case to a Verizon Wireless customer-service executive from my consumer-advocacy site: https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/verizon-wireless/.
    It’s hard to know what happened with that Jamaica call. Maybe someone gained access to your account. Someone could have taken your phone while you were asleep. You also might have accidentally dialed a number — although it’s unlikely that you would be on the phone for 121 minutes. The point being, there’s no way to prove you were correct about not calling Jamaica.
    I suggested that you contact Verizon Wireless via chat. You did, and the company agreed to credit you for the $291 phone call. But then it didn’t. You reached out to me again, this time with Verizon’s promise in writing. I asked Verizon Wireless about your credit, and you finally received your money back.

    Consistent with Section 5.B - Unique Invoice Number Requirements and Section 5.C - Selecting the Appropriate Vendor and Address Sequence of this Chapter, Business Units must assign a unique invoice number for each voucher, and must select the correct Vendor ID and address sequence when processing payments to vendors.

    Process and Document Preparation:

    1. Select the correct Vendor ID.
    • When paying Verizon for land line phone services, select one of the four Vendor IDs, as follows:
      • 1000012731 VERIZON BUSINESS NETWORK SERVICES INC – for services provided under statewide contract OGS01-PS63765-1140268
      • 1000039769 VERIZON SELECT SERVICES INC – for services provided via unregulated circuits, which is indicated by the remit-to addresses of PO BOX 4648, Trenton, NJ or PO BOX 101956, Atlanta, GA

    Most wireless carriers will knock $5 to $10 off your bill if you sign up for automatic payments.     • Four lines of unlimited data cost $100 per month with Boost Mobile, but $160 per month (before discounts) with its parent company, Sprint.

    • Verizon customers can get 6GB of prepaid data for $40 per month or 2GB of postpaid data for $55 per month.

    3. Change or remove your cell phone insurance

    Most cell phone carriers offer a variety of protection plans. Your options can include extended warranties, insurance and full-blown 24/7 tech support for any Bluetooth-enabled device in your home.

    In most cases, standard insurance provides more than enough coverage. It protects you if your phone is lost, stolen or damaged. It’s also the least expensive option available through your wireless carrier.

    Switching from a premium protection plan to basic insurance coverage will save you a few dollars each month. Remove insurance entirely and you’ll save $80 to $180 per year, depending on your carrier and current protection plan.

    Dropping insurance could be risky if you have a brand-new phone, but it can make sense for older devices. That’s because insurance providers for major cell phone carriers typically charge deductibles ranging from $100 to $300.

    If forgoing a policy makes you feel vulnerable, consider an alternative, such as AppleCare+ or SquareTrade.

    4. Skip the phone upgrade

    Your smartphone is built to last more than two years, but most people still trade up after 24 months. Doing so locks you into another 18 to 24 months of payments for that new phone — adding $20 to $40 per month, per line to your bill. Keeping your smartphone for even a year after it's paid off can save you hundreds of dollars. So, wait until your phone truly needs to be replaced before upgrading. Then, consider a used cell phone to save even more money.

    5. Cash in on discounts

    Students, government employees, current and former service members, and employees of some companies may qualify for a discount on their cell phone service. The easiest way to find out: Call your carrier or stop into a store. You often need to verify your status — with an email address or pay stub, for example — to keep your discount active.

    6. Add lines

    This seems counterintuitive, because adding one or more lines will increase your bill. But splitting the cost with other people can lower the amount you each pay. Here's how that works out:

    • One line on AT&T's Unlimited Starter plan is $65 per month (after autopay discounts, before taxes and fees). But if you have four lines on that same plan, the cost per line is $35.

    • One line on Verizon's 8GB plan is $90, but if you have four lines sharing the plan, the price drops to $37.50 per line before taxes, fees and device charges.

    7. Update your service address

    The taxes and fees added to your bill each month are based on where you live. If you’ve moved to a new state, or someone on your family plan has, you could save big just by updating your service address.

    Even if you don’t use the internet when you’re out and about, your apps might still be using it in the background. Sneaky, we know.

    Go into your settings and look over the Cellular Data Usage and Background App Refresh of each app and turn off the ones you don’t really use. Making this quick flip means you’ll know they aren’t running in the background and draining your data (and your battery) while you’re minding your own business.

    Need to bring up your Starbucks app while you’re waiting in line? No big deal. You can turn on cellular data for a specific app anytime you want.

    3. Cut the insurance.

    Let’s say you pay about $11 a month for phone insurance. That adds up to an extra $132 a year you’re shelling out just in case something happens to your phone. Instead, set aside a few extra dollars a month so you can pay for a replacement phone if you ever need one.

    If you still feel like you really “need” insurance for your cell phone, stop and ask yourself this question: Have I bought a phone I can’t actually afford? If you don’t have the cash on hand to replace your phone if something happens to it, your phone is too expensive for your budget.

    4. Sign up for automated payments or paperless billing.

    Here’s one way to lower your cell phone bill with very little effort. This probably won’t save you a huge amount of money. But if you could save $5 a month just for going paperless or having your bill automatically taken out of your account, why wouldn’t you?

    5. Take advantage of your employee discount.

    Another thing to find out is if your work offers team members a general corporate discount. It’s also worth a shot to see if they reimburse you for using your phone for work (email, calls, etc.). And if you’re using your phone for a home business or side hustle, you might be able to write off some of your cost when tax time rolls around.

    6. Buy no-contract phones.

    Cell phone companies know how to make money—lots and lots of money. One way they do that is through contracts. To buy a phone through them, you’ll usually have to sign a two-year or even three-year contract to use their network. And then they’ll hit you with a ridiculous cancellation charge if you try to switch carriers.

    So, what do you do instead? Buy no-contract, gently used phones. These phones are labeled “unlocked”  (meaning you can use them with any carrier) and can take a SIM card. Ask around and look online for older phone models to purchase at a discounted price.

    No, you won’t get the hottest or newest smartphone this way, but you can get a really good smartphone without locking yourself into one expensive company for years to come. Which leads us to the next tip here . . .

    7. Keep your phone longer.

    Want a lower cell phone bill? This is one of the easiest ways to do it! Hang on to that phone as long as you can! Does your “old” phone make calls just fine? Great. Keep it a little longer. Don’t get tempted by the latest and greatest shiny cell phone on the market. A phone is a phone.

    8. Don’t do a payment plan for your phone.

    This is one of the simplest ways to get a lower cell phone bill. Steer clear of rolling the cost of a brand-new phone into your wireless bill. You’d just be making payments on a new phone (yeah, that counts as debt) all while it hikes up your phone bill even more. No thanks!

    Let’s say you want to buy a new iPhone. We all know that sucker isn’t cheap. And your cellular provider is offering it to you for a low monthly payment of $30 a month—for two years. That means your entire phone bill will be $30 higher than it needs to be for two years!Wouldn’t you rather have an extra 30 bucks to put toward your money goals?

    And what happens if you lose the phone or it breaks? You’re going to need a new phone. But you’ll still have to pay off the remaining balance left over from the old phone. Well, gee, that stinks.

    Believe us, paying for your phone outright will save you a ton of money in the long run.

    9. Cut out the stuff you don’t use.

    Take a look at your monthly bill. This might seem like common sense, but you’d be surprised by how many people don’t look at the breakdown of their cell phone bill. Don’t continue to pay for things you never use, like too many minutes, unlimited data, emergency roadside assistance, 411 and “enhanced voicemail” (whatever that means).

    Decide if you really need everything you’re paying for. If the answer is no, it could be time to switch your plan. If you don’t talk on your phone a lot, you might be able to downgrade to a plan with fewer minutes. And if you never even come close to reaching your data limit, find a plan that includes less.

    Some carriers even offer prepaid plans or let you pay for only what you use. See if either of those options could reduce your costs. Look into all the possibilities out there!

    10. Ask for a better price.

    When you’re in the market for a new phone, don’t just assume you have to pay the sticker price. Go to the store and talk with a salesperson to see if you can get the activation or upgrade fee waived (aka canceled so you don’t have to pay for it!). If you’ve been a customer for a long time, be sure to bring that up to see if you can score a loyalty discount.

    And if you find a great offer from a competitor, ask your current provider if they can match it. Use whatever bargaining chip you have, including fees—or lack of fees—from competitors. It never hurts to ask for a better deal. Competition with other carriers is stiff, so they might just agree! But if they won’t negotiate, move on to our next point.

    11. Switch carriers.

    So, you’ve tried everything else. We saved the best (and most drastic) for last: It’s time to switch your service provider! Shop around to see who can give you what you need for the price that fits your budget. You’ll probably discover a better deal at one of the smaller, lesser-known carriers. Most of them have some link to the “big guys” and use their cellular towers for your phone signal anyway. So chances are, you’re still going to get pretty great coverage—but at a fraction of the cost.

    Just make sure you do your research. Ask around. Read reviews. And don’t sign up with a lousy carrier.

    12. Add up the long-term costs.

    If you’re shopping carriers and aren’t sure who to pick, this is one surefire way to see it all in black and white. Add up the cost of the phone itself plus the cost of the service for the whole year. That puts the total amount in your face instead of just the easy-to-chew, month-to-month payments. Be sure to do this before you actually take the plunge and switch.

    Q: I have a fraudulent charge on my bill from Verizon Wireless for an international call I never made. I called Verizon’s customer-service department, which put me on hold to consult with its fraud department. A representative claimed that I had called Jamaica and talked for 121 minutes.
    I told her that it could not be true. I’m 75 years old and am usually in bed by the time that call was supposedly made.

    A: You shouldn’t have to pay for a call you didn’t make. Verizon Wireless says you made the call; you say you didn’t. That’s a difficult “she said/he said” kind of situation. I’m sure the cellular carrier’s records show a call made from your account to Jamaica, but I’m equally sure that you didn’t call anyone in Jamaica.
    So what to do? First, let’s talk about the price of a 121-minute call to Jamaica on your cellphone. The standard pay-per-minute rate to call Jamaica from the United States without a calling plan is $1.99 per minute. That comes to about $240. You say there were other “associated” costs with the call that brought your total to $291.
    Is that rate reasonable? I leave that to you and my readers to decide, but I think I know the answer. Now, you could have reduced that rate by signing up for a monthly call plan. But why would you if you never call Jamaica?
    There ought to be a way to disable your ability to make an international long-distance call from your cellphone, but as far as I can tell, there isn’t. (You can read about how Verizon’s international calls work on its website: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/international-long-distance-faqs/.) It feels like with these high rates, and your inability to block calls, your phone is a money trap, waiting for you to butt-dial China.
    Another way to ensure that no one uses your phone is to lock it down. Use a security code or a fingerprint to guarantee that only you can use the device. If you have grandkids running around the house, you wouldn’t want one of them to prank call someone in the Caribbean.
    I know what I’m talking about. I have three kids, and they are always trying to gain access to my phone. It’s not that difficult if you use a short security code to unlock your smartphone.
    To solve this problem, you want to put it in writing. Although the company strongly prefers a phone call, I would resist the temptation. Verizon records its phone calls for “quality” assurance, but you don’t have access to the recordings, which puts you at a disadvantage. There’s no record of the content of your call. Instead, I would initiate a live chat (https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/contact-us/. Having something in writing is extremely helpful. If you don’t get anywhere, you can always appeal your case to a Verizon Wireless customer-service executive from my consumer-advocacy site: https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/verizon-wireless/.
    It’s hard to know what happened with that Jamaica call. Maybe someone gained access to your account. Someone could have taken your phone while you were asleep. You also might have accidentally dialed a number — although it’s unlikely that you would be on the phone for 121 minutes. The point being, there’s no way to prove you were correct about not calling Jamaica.
    I suggested that you contact Verizon Wireless via chat. You did, and the company agreed to credit you for the $291 phone call. But then it didn’t. You reached out to me again, this time with Verizon’s promise in writing. I asked Verizon Wireless about your credit, and you finally received your money back.

    Verizon customer service is top notch

    I’ve only been with Verizon for one month and they have been on top of every question or concern I have with my new phone and my new service. They are a little more expensive then most basic phone plans but I’d rather pay a little extra to have the wonderful customer service that I have experienced so far. I’m south of DFW about 20 minutes and cell service isn’t as good as AT&T as of yet but hopefully that will change because most of the people I know are switching from AT&T just because the customer service alone. If we could just get a little better signal in the area I would be 110% positive this is the only phone service anyone would need and let AT&T move out. AT&T is cheaper but you get what you pay for and an extra $20-$30 a month is well worth having representatives from Verizon there to help you then AT&T is price gouging on everything there name is attached to and offer you no support. Not trying to bash AT&T but the facts are the facts. Thanks Verizon for giving us another quality option in the DFW area

    Absolutely the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. I give it 0 stars . I’ve been a long , loyal , upstanding customer with Verizon for many years , and at the beginning of 2020, I discovered I was being overcharged , and then the pandemic set in . I could not reach a customer rep for months . When I did , I was told I wasn’t switched to the new plan and was overpaying by at least $100- for months . I barely make any money as it is . I was also informed that Verizon cares about their customers and they “ understand” we’ve fallen on hard times , but that the offer to help with plans and payments was expired ? I didn’t even know about this offer ? No one told me until it was too late ? The pandemic is still going , last I’d heard . Gee - thanks. Great caring for your customers ! After making a payment arrangement and sticking to it , I recently learned it wasn’t being held up on Verizon’s end and I was being charged over 100 more than initially agreed upon , and this was following a payment I just made ? Then I was informed I was paying convenience fees ( which I was told I wasn’t ) and then late fees because of late payments ? I wasn’t late !! This is absurd and I can’t get a customer representative who can actually help me and resolve this in a fair and amicable way ! This is an utter disgrace ! I look forward to leaving this company . It’s a shame . They USED to be great ..

    Digital Customer Support

    Digital chat and support is fine for many routine matters but there needs to be a better way to handle complicated questions and complaints. I have a 55+ Unlimited plan and got a new iPhone mini and wanted to add 5G and was told it would cost $25, but because this drequired a plan change it cost more than $100. I needed someone to explain this to me and the digital system did not provide this. I should be able to say representative and get someone. Instead I had to go to a Verizon store where a very nice and helpful person explained what happened. I told her I planned to write a letter to corporate headquarters and she suggested I call customer support. After a long roundabout with your digital system that gave no response to my prompt of Computer complaint or 55+ Unlimited but just offered the plans I could change to which did not include 55+ Unlimited. Finally I was prompted to schedule a call. Why wasn’t that suggested to me sooner. So I spent 3 hours to go to the store and return and call digital until I finally got an outstanding employee on the phone who explained the escalation system and resolved the situation in 15 minutes. By the way as a senior on a fixed income I would be forced to switch to a discount source without your 55+ Unlimited. That plan is a real boon for seniors. You should bring it back.

    In the past few months, I've used very, very little cellular data. Yet my family has paid around $200 per month for our five-member unlimited-data family plan on AT&T. That seems ... silly, to put it nicely. If you've thought the same, well, you have a few options.

    First, you can suspend your phone service. It lets the carrier hold onto your phone number and account, and while you still pay a small monthly fee, it's a way to save a little money month to month. In this climate, every dollar counts. The downside? You lose cellular data connectivity, and you cannot make or receive phone calls or texts.

    But your phone will be able to connect to Wi-Fi networks, like the one you might have in your home, allowing you to use almost all your usual apps. To get around the SMS and calling issue, you could use an instant-messaging app like iMessage or WhatsApp as well as audio- or video-calling apps like FaceTime and Google Duo over Wi-Fi. For less-drastic options, we have a few alternative and affordable carriers for you to consider.

    Suspending Service vs. Shutting off Data

    We have instructions below on how to suspend your data plan if you're on one of the major US networks. If you use another carrier, like US Cellular, check the company's support pages (or ask a customer representative) if there's a way to suspend your service.

    Most carriers also have an option to shut off data to one of your phone lines on the account. That is not the same as suspending service. By shutting off data, you'll still be charged your plan's monthly rate. It's more a measure for when you want to stop your kid from watching too much Riverdale.

    Suspending service means your phone will no longer connect to your carrier's network, and you cannot make any calls or send texts. It's not a permanent solution as most carriers limit the length of suspension to a few months, after which service resumes automatically and you're back to being charged your full rate.

    For Verizon Subscribers

    If you have trouble paying your Verizon wireless bill, contact customer service. The carrier says it will not terminate service or charge late fees if you can't pay bills due to "disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic." This will stay in effect until June 30, 2020.

    If you still need to suspend service, you can easily do it through Verizon's website or the My Verizon app.

    Verizon offers three types of suspension: reduced-rate billing, without billing, or suspended with billing. You can suspend your line without billing only if you have lost your device or if you are in the military. For a reduced rate, you'll need to suspend your service using the Other Reason option, which is typically used for travel or illness and hospitalization.

    Go with the reduced-rate billing, but know that Verizon will still charge you $10 per month for up to 90 days during a 12-month period. If you are paying for a device in monthly installments, you'll still get charged for it. Your contract and upgrade eligibility dates will be extended for the length of time your service is suspended.

    In the My Verizon app, the one you use to check and pay your monthly bill, head to Devices > Manage > Controls > Suspend Device > Vacation or other reason, and choose Reduced Rate. On the web, choose the line you want to suspend, click on Other Reason, choose Reduced Rate, and tap Suspend Selected Line.

    You can find more information in this FAQ, and there's a helpful video that includes details on how to reconnect. (Go to this website to reconnect or follow the same instructions you used for suspending a line above and just click Resume Service.)

    For AT&T Subscribers

    AT&T's process is very similar to Verizon's, though the language is a little vague. The carrier says the capability to suspend service is available for AT&T Mobile Share and Unlimited postpaid wireless customers. Head to this website to suspend service. You'll need to choose a reason, likely Vacation or Other Reason. Follow the prompts. Do not block your device. (Do that only if it was stolen.)

    The carrier doesn't specify this anywhere on its site, but you will still be billed for any device payments you owe. You will be charged a reduced rate of $10 per month, but this is not necessarily guaranteed. Plus, service and billing will resume as normal after six months. You're limited to this option once a year, and your upgrade eligibility dates will be pushed out however long your line was suspended.

    Thankfully, AT&T has a specific option for folks struggling to pay bills during the pandemic. You can submit a waiver for late fees and overage charges, but the deadline is June 30. You can find out more details here.

    For T-Mobile Subscribers

    T-Mobile lets you suspend a line on your account (if you're the primary account holder) twice in a 12-month period for up to 90 days each. From the T-Mobile app, head to the Account tab, select the line you want to suspend, and choose Temporary suspension. Follow the prompts to suspend a line. These steps are the same when you want to restore service.

    Any monthly device payments or device protection plans will continue. If you have an individual account, you'll be charged $10 per month instead of the cost of your regular monthly plan, and if you have a family plan, you'll be charged $10 per month for each suspended line. You'll find more details in this handy FAQ.

    T-Mobile is offering coronavirus updates here. There are a few perks people can claim, like the ability to add 10 gigabytes of mobile hot spot data, though many of these expire June 30, 2020.

    For Sprint Subscribers

    Sprint doesn't have a lot of information on its website about suspending service. The carrier had a service called Seasonal Standby that let you pay a lesser rate to maintain your account, but it's no longer available. After searching the app and website to no avail, I asked a customer representative (and a spokesperson) how to suspend service and was told that it's not possible to do it online. You'll need to talk to a customer representative. There will be a reduced monthly fee when you suspend service, but exactly what it is will depend on your plan.

    If you're having trouble making payments, contact Sprint here, and it says it will try to help. This offer will end on June 30. You can get more updates on Sprint and the pandemic here.

    Sprint and T-Mobile have merged, and the Sprint branding is fading away soon, so there's a good chance the T-Mobile instructions will work for existing Sprint subscribers in the not-too-distant future.

    Consider a Cheaper Network

    If suspending service doesn't sound right for you, it might be a good time to switch carriers. Below are a few options we like. Remember, when switching carriers you can always port your existing cellphone number.

    • Google Fi: Google charges you $20 per line and $10 per gigabyte (that includes unlimited talk and text). You get charged for the data you use, so if you use only 1 GB in a month, your bill will be $30. Best of all, you can pause service and resume it whenever you want. There's also Bill Protection, so after you use 6 GB, you won't get charged more. That means the max your bill will hit is $80 on a single line. The app is very easy to use, you get access to T-Mobile's network (and other networks if you have a Fi-supported phone), as well as the same data rate abroad.

    • Mint Mobile: This provider has three-, six-, and 12-month plans. Whichever range you pick, you can decide on one of three data buckets (3 GB, 8 GB, or 12 GB per month). It includes unlimited talk and text, mobile hot spot, and you'll need to bring your own unlocked phone. It uses T-Mobile's LTE network. The most affordable option gets you 3 gigabytes of data per month for three months, all for $45. If you stick with the same plan after the first three months, you'll be charged the regular three-month rate for that data allotment, which is $75 total. Still, that's six months of data for $120.

    • Visible: Visible is a sub-brand under Verizon, and it has one plan: $40 per month for unlimited data, talk, and text. You can bring your own phone or buy one from Visible. The service piggybacks off Verizon's 4G LTE network, and mobile hot spot access for your laptop or another device is included, but speeds are capped at 5 Mbps. Visible's data plan was originally capped to 5 Mbps as well, but since mid-2019, the cap was removed for a "limited time" and hasn't yet returned.

    • Ting: Ting is very customizable and affordable. You start by choosing the number of lines you need (1 line is $6), then a certain number of talk minutes and texts (choose no usage if you barely call or text people). Remember, using internet services like Facebook Messenger or FaceTime won't count toward your calling and texting limits. And then you choose your data allotment, ranging from no usage to more than 2 gigabytes. It's meant for people who use very little data, because after 2 GB you'll pay $20 plus $10 per additional gigabyte. There are no contracts or cancellation fees, and you can suspend service if you want.

    • Metro by T-Mobile: Metro by T-Mobile, as the name suggests, is owned by T-Mobile and uses the carrier's network. Its most affordable option is its $30 plan, which comes with 2 GB of data and unlimited talk and text. Its most expensive plan is still relatively affordable, offering unlimited data, talk, and text, as well as 15 GB of hot spot data for $60 per month. That includes perks like 100 GB of Google One online storage and Amazon Prime.
