We continue our countdown of the top-10 teams in Central Indiana with No. 9 North Central. Here is No. 10.
North Central football not only returned to relevancy last season, the Panthers won a sectional for the first time in 25 years and nearly upset eventual undefeated state champion Warren Central in the Class 6A regional.
What can North Central do for an encore?
“We hope it’s the start,” said North Central coach Kevin O’Shea, going into his third season. “We tried to lay the foundation the first year. Last year was a pretty special season for us, we played pretty well in the majority of our games. In the (Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference) we could be .500 and still be a contender for a state championship.”
North Central was 9-3 a year ago, a remarkable turnaround for a program that was a three-win team the previous season and had not posted a winning season since 2006. After blasting Hamilton Southeastern (41-12) and Fishers (42-7) to win the sectional, North Central went toe-to-toe with Warren Central on a bitterly cold night in the regional round before falling, 42-32.
“We’re going to keep that same mentality that every game is big for us,” said senior safety Michael Brown, who was second on the team last year with 153 tackles. “We’re going to keep that dog mentality and play every game our hardest.”
The Panthers will have to replace a lot of production on offense, including two-year starting quarterback Liam Thompson (2,653 passing yards, 23 touchdowns; chase customer service phone number rushing yards, 10 TDs), top running back Alexander Tarver (862 rushing yards, six TDs) and top receivers Tre’von Elliott (61 catches, 970 yards, 10 TDs) and Jordan Bingham (54 catches, 713 yards).
The top returner on offense is senior receiver Richard Hamilton (32 catches, 643 yards, seven TDs). Junior running back David Smith (197 rushing yards last year) contra costa health senior Bryant Jefferson are expected to compete for time in the backfield.
“Both kids have impressed me over the summer,” O’Shea said of the running backs. We’re going to get some really good looks the first week of camp and the first scrimmage vs. Noblesville. We may go by committee or one guy. We’ll see how it shakes out.”
The quarterback spot is a definite question mark. O’Shea said three players – senior Harry Abell, junior Zayd Vestal and senior Shamar Dabner (a transfer from Ben Davis) – will compete for the starting spot. All three have different positive attributes.
“Harry has a big arm and has spent two years with us,” O’Shea said. “Vestal is a junior and been with us a couple years, but missed most of his freshman year with Tommy John surgery so he is about a half-step behind. He just needs a little more confidence in the offense. Shamar Dabner transferred in and we’re trying to give him a look. He hasn’t been in our offense so he has a steep learning curve.”
The defense is more experienced and may have to carry the load for north central high school indianapolis graduation 2019 Panthers, especially early in the season. The graduation of leading tackler Harrison Ochs is a big loss in the secondary, but should be offset by North central high school indianapolis graduation 2019 return. Junior linebacker Thomas Bronaugh (81 tackles), junior linebacker Jaden Ward (67 tackles), senior linebacker Grant Russell (60 tackles), senior linebacker Cameron Brown (53 tackles) and junior cornerback Theron Johnson (33 homes for sale in tall oaks edmond ok are other top returners.
“Replacing Harry Ochs is huge,” O’Shea said. “He was a great eraser back there for us. We have some players who came up through the ranks last year that we liked who will help us. We are bigger up front defensively. Last year our biggest linemen were 230 (pounds), 200 and 190. We are gaining a little physicality and size.”
There is a definitely a different vibe around North Central football than there has been in years. A nine-win season will do that.
“The whole attitude has changed,” Brown said. “People are starting to realize how good we are.”
Schedule overview: The Panthers will open at Lucas Oil Stadium against Fishers and then host Hamilton Southeastern in Week 2 before getting into MIC play on the road at Warren Central. A telling stretch will be the back-to-back games against Center Grove (Sept. 20) and at Carmel (Sept. 27). North Central did not benefit from sectional realignment, moving to Sectional 7 with Warren Central, Lawrence North and Lawrence Central.
Expectation: It might be unrealistic to expect another 9-3 season considering how many key players graduated on offense. But the Panthers won’t fall off the table, either. Expect another winning north central high school indianapolis graduation 2019. If the offense can get going – and considering O’Shea’s history, it will – the North Central will be formidable in the sectional as well.
