Dollar Tree, formerly known as Only $1.00, is an American multi-price-point chain of discountvariety stores. Headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia, it is a Fortune 500 company and operates 15,115 stores throughout the 48 contiguous U.S. states and Canada.[1] Its stores are supported by a nationwide logistics network of 24 distribution centers. Additionally, the company operates stores under the name of Dollar Bills, as well as a multi-price-point variety chain under the Family Dollar banner.

Dollar Tree competes in the dollar store and low-end retail markets. Each Dollar Tree stocks a variety of products including national, regional, and private-label brands. Departments found in a Dollar Tree store include health and beauty, food and snacks, party, seasonal décor, housewares, glassware, dinnerware, household cleaning supplies, candy, toys, gifts, gift bags and wrap, stationery, craft supplies, teaching supplies, automotive, electronics, pet supplies, and books. Most Dollar Tree stores also sell frozen foods and dairy items such as milk, eggs, pizza, ice cream, frozen dinners, and pre-made baked goods. In August 2012, the company began accepting manufacturer's coupons at all of its store locations.[4]

    History[edit]

    Early years[edit]

In 1953, K. R. Perry[5] opened a Ben Franklin variety store in Norfolk, Virginia, which later became known as K&K 5&10.

In 1970, K. R. Perry, Doug Perry, and Macon Brock started K&K Toys in Norfolk, Virginia. This mall concept grew to over 130 stores on the East Coast.[5]

In 1986, Doug Perry, Macon Brock, and Ray Compton started another chain store called Only $1.00 with five stores, one in Georgia, one in Tennessee, and three in Virginia. The expansion of dollar stores was continued alongside K&K Toys stores, mostly in enclosed malls.[5]

In 1991, the corporation made a decision to focus exclusively on the expansion of dollar stores after selling K&K stores to KB Toys, owned by Melville Corporation.[5]

    1990s[edit]

In 1993, the name Only $1.00 was changed to Dollar Tree Stores to address what could be a multi-price-point strategy in the future, and part equity interest was sold to SKM partners, a private equity firm.[5]

Brock and the co-founders of Dollar Tree got the idea for the company from another retailer known as Everything's A Dollar, which went bankrupt in the 1990s.[6]

On March 6, 1995, Dollar Tree, Inc. went public on the NASDAQ exchange at $15 a share, with a market cap then calculated at $225 million.[citation needed]

In 1996, Dollar Tree acquired Dollar Bill$, Inc., a Chicago-based chain of 136 stores.

In 1997, the company opened its first distribution center and its new store support center, both located in Chesapeake, Virginia.

In 1998, Dollar Tree acquired 98-Cent Clearance Centers in California.[citation needed]

In 1999, Dollar Tree acquired Only $One stores based in New York state.[7] That same year, the company opened its second distribution center in Olive Branch, Mississippi.

    2000s[edit]

This Dollar Tree store in Northwood, Ohio, is one of the few stores that continues to use the defunct Super Dollar Tree banner.

In 2000, Dollar Tree acquired Dollar Express, a Philadelphia-based company, and also built a new distribution center in Stockton, California.[8][9] In 2001, the company opened two additional distribution centers, in Savannah, Georgia, and Briar Creek, Pennsylvania.[10][11] In 2003, Dollar Tree acquired Salt Lake City, Utah-based Greenbacks, Inc., and opened a new distribution center in Marietta, Oklahoma.[12][13]

In 2004, Dollar Tree opened its first store in North Dakota which marked its operation of stores in all 48 contiguous states. The company also opened new distribution centers in Joliet, Illinois, and Ridgefield, Washington.[14][15]

In 2006, Dollar Tree celebrated its 20th year of retailing at a $1.00 price point, opened its 3,000th store, and acquired 138 DEAL$ stores, previously owned by SUPERVALU INC.[16]

In 2007, Dollar Tree expanded its Briar Creek Distribution Center and crossed the $4 billion sales threshold.[17] In 2008, Dollar Tree earned a place in the Fortune 500. By the close of 2009, the company opened a store in Washington, D.C., and purchased a new distribution center in San Bernardino, California.[18]

In 2009, Dollar Tree redesigned its website with a new e-commerce platform. DollarTree.com sells Dollar Tree merchandise in larger quantities to individuals, small businesses, and organizations. The company also advertises in-store events, specials, seasonal promotions, and featured products through the site and users can locate a retail store, research information about Dollar Tree, and view product recalls. Dollar Tree also added customer ratings and reviews and customer stories to the site.

    2010s[edit]

In 2010, the corporation opened its 4,000th chain store and acquired 86 Canadian Dollar Giant stores which are based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The stores are operated in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario. These are the first retail locations outside of the United States operated by Dollar Tree.

In 2011, Dollar Tree achieved total sales of $6.63 billion, opened 278 new stores, and completed a 400,000 square-foot expansion of its distribution center in Savannah, Georgia.

In 2012, Dollar Tree opened another 345 new stores and exceeded $7 billion in sales, with an end-of-the-year market cap at $9.13 billion.

On July 28, 2014, Dollar Tree announced that it was offering $9.2 billion for the purchase of competitor chain store Family Dollar. On August 18, 2014, Dollar General lodged a competing bid of $9.7 billion for Family Dollar.[19] The bid was rejected on August 20, 2014, by the Family Dollar board, which said it would proceed with the deal with Dollar Tree.[20]

In January 2015, Dollar Tree announced plans to divest 300 stores in order to appease US regulators scrutinizing its proposed takeover of Family Dollar stores.[21]

In June 2015, the firm agreed to sell 330 stores to private equity company Sycamore Partners as part of the approval process for its $8.5 billion takeover of Family Dollar.[22]

The company was ranked 134 on the 2018 Fortune 500 list of the United States corporations by revenue.[23]

In March 2019, as part of its reposition plan, Dollar Tree announced that it will close up to 390 Family Dollar stores along with renovating 1,000 other locations.[24]

    2020s[edit]

On March 3, 2021, it was announced that Dollar Tree had quietly introduced a combination Family Dollar/Dollar Tree store concept with the first one opening in early 2021.[25] Dollar Tree has opened and operated nearly 50 locations by the end of 2020, primarily in small towns with populations of just a few thousand people.[26]

On September 28, 2021, CEO Michael Wytinski, citing increased shipping and labor costs squeezing profit margins, announced that some prices will be rising above $1, possibly to as much as $1.50.[27]

On November 23, 2021, it was announced that Dollar Tree plans to raise its prices from a dollar for typical items to $1.25 in response to inflation and pressure from investors to raise prices. Some of the items sold at Dollar Tree will not have its prices increased. The retailer will introduce the new price point in more than 2,000 stores by December 2021 and complete the roll-out across most of its 8,000 stores by the first quarter of 2022.[28]

    Business strategy[edit]

Dollar Tree is classified as an extreme discount store.[29] It claims to be able to achieve this because their buyers "work extremely hard to find the best bargains out there", and it has "great control over the tremendous buying power at the dollar price-point".[30] Its prices are primarily designed to attract financially disadvantaged customers, but it has also become popular within immigrant communities.[29]

    Family Dollar bidding[edit]

On July 28, 2014, Dollar Tree announced that a deal had been reached and approved by both parties to purchase Family Dollar for $8.5 billion plus acquisition of the $1 billion in debt currently held by Family Dollar.[31][32][33] The deal came in the month following activist investor and major shareholder[34]Carl Icahn's demand that Family Dollar be promptly put up for sale.[35] After their reported deal had been struck, Dollar General entered the bidding, surpassing Dollar Tree's offer, with a $9.7 billion bid on August 18, 2014.[36] On August 20, 2014, Family Dollar rejected the Dollar General bid, saying it was not a matter of price, but concerns over antitrust issues that had convinced the company and its advisers that the deal could not be concluded on the terms proposed. The Family Dollar board had been analyzing potential antitrust issues that could arise from doing a deal with Dollar General, since the start of the year a statement from CEO Howard Levine outlined.[20]

    Canada[edit]

Dollar Tree stores in Canada sell items for C$1.50 or less.[37] On October 11, 2010, Dollar Tree announced its acquisition of Dollar Giant, originally incorporated in 2001 in Vancouver, Canada, for $52 million.[38][39] At the time of the acquisition, Dollar Giant had about 85 retail outlets in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario.[40] Approximately 30 of its retail locations are in British Columbia, making it the second largest dollar store chain in that province. It was Canada's fourth largest operator of dollar stores. Dollar Tree has since rebranded all of its Dollar Giant stores to Dollar Tree; these were the first retail locations outside of the United States operated by Dollar Tree. The company now operates 227 stores across Canada, concentrated in Western Canada and Ontario. Dollar Tree Canada's merchandising team is located in Mississauga, Ontario, while its corporate office remains in Burnaby in Greater Vancouver.[41]

    Recalls[edit]

The Consumer Product Safety Commission lists several recalls for products sold at Dollar Tree stores. The recalled products include salsa jars with broken glass inside them, hot-melt mini glue guns (recalled in January 2008) which could short circuit and cause burns,[42] and candle sets (recalled in February 2004) which could produce excessive flame.[43]

Dollar Tree changed everything behind how far $1 could go and to this day, I am avid dollar store shopper because I cannot even tell you how many amazing things you can find for $1!

Dollar Tree Will No Longer Just Cost a Dollar

I guess I should say “could find” because ‘Dollar Tree’ Will No Longer Just Cost a Dollar and people don’t seem to be happy about the change!

‘Dollar Tree’ Will No Longer Just Cost a Dollar

Earlier this year Dollar Tree decided to comply with angry investors and test out select stores with offering products that cost more than a dollar. These test stores were referred to as ‘Dollar Tree Plus’.

      https://www.instagram.com/p/ByYf8TThbJR/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

The company aimed to see at these test stores how its economically sensitive customers responded to the higher price point items.

The word is, Dollar Tree bought out Family Dollar so they could combine the two brands and two pricing structures.

      https://www.instagram.com/p/BxwJcTihSxD/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Apparently, it went well because investors were so satisfied with the results, the company is now moving from test phase to a wider rollout at 100 stores.

      https://www.instagram.com/p/BxvEAIqDB9H/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Named “Dollar Tree Plus!”, the initiative will feature products across many categories that are priced above $1. Dollar Tree management was quick to point out in its Thursday earnings release it was not raising prices on its assortment. Instead, “Dollar Tree Plus!” would be additive to the sales floor.

“With its ‘Everything’s a Dollar’ model, Dollar Tree has remained one of the most unique, differentiated and defensible brand concepts in all of value retail. However, we have always been a ‘test-and-learn’ organization that is committed to evaluating all opportunities to deliver great value for our customers while driving long-term value creation. During this test, we look forward to measuring and assessing the initial results and understanding if the introduction of multiple price points across a broader set of stores is in the best interests of our customers, Company and shareholders,”

Dollar Tree CEO Gary Philbin said in a statement.

But how are people really feeling about this?

I looked at Twitter and people are confused. After all, it is Dollar Tree and even a name change can’t fool anyone.

And the most confusing part is that even the Dollar Tree “about us” page talks about being only $1 and how they hear the following reactions all the time:

“I can’t believe this cool item I just found at Dollar Tree!” AND…
      “I can’t believe it’s only $1.00!”

Dollar Tree Will No Longer Just Cost a Dollar

Stores still have signs up that say “Everything’s $1.00” so could this be means for false advertising? I don’t see this going well for people that may not notice the small banner placed near the front of the store…

Nonetheless, you might be able to score some awesome deals on name brand items for your home that are still greatly priced.

It’ll be interesting to see how this goes and even more interesting to see if these price increases come to a store near me.

There are a number of dollar stores across the U.S., but as time's gone on, very few shops have stayed true to their name and managed to continue offering products for just $1. Dollar Tree largely stuck to that price point until 2019, when the retailer began opening new Dollar Tree Plus stores, which offer sections of items for $3 to $5. Then, earlier this year, the Dollar Tree started opening up combo stores, which merge Dollar Tree and Family Dollar, a discount store the former company acquired in 2015. And now, instead of opening up more spin-off stores with new price points, Dollar Tree just announced a major change in pricing for its original brand. Read on to find out what may change the next time you shop at Dollar Tree.

PLATTSBURGH, USA - AUGUST 23, 2017 : Dollar Tree shop online signage. with american flag. Dollar Tree, Inc. is an American chain of discount variety stores that sells items for one dollar or less.

On Sept. 28, Dollar Tree, Inc. announced new price changes for its original Dollar Tree stores. According to the announcement, the company "will begin testing additional price points above $1 in selected legacy Dollar Tree stores." The company did not indicate exactly which products would be more than $1 in price or which specific Dollar Tree stores will be introducing these higher-priced items. But, according to The Wall Street Journal, more than 100 legacy stores will carry the more expensive products.

"Our brand promise is that customers get great value for what they spend at Dollar Tree. We will continue to be fiercely protective of that promise, regardless of the price point, whether it is $1.00, $1.25, $1.50," Michael Witynski, the president and chief executive officer of Dollar Tree, said in a statement.

Witynski told WSJ that the higher prices are necessary to offset increased costs to the company. Dollar Tree's lower price points mean that freight costs take up a higher percentage of its gross merchandise margin, he said, and as supply chain issues hit almost every industry this past year, these costs have risen.

The company is also among the many facing labor shortages in warehouses and stores, so it has had to increase pay at some locations, offer sign-on bonuses, and host hiring events, according to Witynski. Now, some of that cost is being passed on to shoppers.

"We recognize the need to make adjustments in the current economic environment," Witynski said, noting there is "pressure … on wages, freight, and on our suppliers and cost increases."

According to Witynski, the Dollar Tree is not get rid of $1 items altogether, but the company sees this as an opportunity to offer a wider range of products. Witynski told WSJ that these new Dollar Tree products may include more frozen meat and seasonal items.

"For decades, our customers have enjoyed the 'thrill-of-the-hunt' for value at one dollar—and we remain committed to that core proposition—but many are telling us that they also want a broader product assortment when they come to shop," Witynski said in a statement. "We believe testing additional price points above $1 for Dollar Tree product will enable us over time to expand our assortments, introduce new products and meet more of our customers' everyday needs."

While the pricing change may have been partly made out of necessity, Dollar Tree says the shift also comes after "positive customer reaction" from its Dollar Tree Plus and combo store formats. The company plans to have 500 Dollar Tree Plus stores in the U.S. by the end of the 2021 fiscal year. Another 1,500 stores are planned for the next fiscal year, and overall, the plan is to have 5,000 Dollar Tree Plus stores by the end of the 2024 fiscal year.

In terms of combo stores, the company has opened 105 locations thus far and expects to add 400 more by the end of the 2022 fiscal year. There is the potential to have at least 3,000 combo stores opened in the next few years, the retailer said in its announcement.

Dollar Tree makes it official: Items will now cost $1.25

NEW YORK -- Faced with the rising cost of goods and freight, discount retail chain Dollar Tree said Tuesday it will be raising its prices to $1.25 for the majority of its products.

Dollar Tree said the reason for raising its prices to $1.25 was not due to “short-term or transitory market conditions” and said the price increases were permanent. The higher prices will also allow the company to cope with high merchandise cost increases as well as higher operating costs, such as wages, it said.

“(Dollar Tree) believes this is the appropriate time to shift away from the constraints of the $1.00 price point in order to continue offering extreme value to customers,” the company said in a statement.

Dollar Tree was one of the last true “dollar stores” after most of its competition had moved away from that price point.

The company, which is based in Chesapeake, Virginia, said in September it was testing hdfc credit card customer care higher prices at select stores. On Tuesday, it said it will introduce the new price point in more than 2,000 additional Dollar Tree stores in December and complete the rollout to all its stores by early next year. The company has about www walmart one com Dollar Tree stores.

CEO Michael Witynski said he expects the Dollar Tree customers to remain loyal.

Its shoppers “believe that at $1.25, it’s still going to be an undeniable value because of what they’re seeing out in the marketplace,” Witynski said on a call with industry analysts. “And they know that Dollar Tree hasn’t raised its price in 35 years, so they’re giving us credit.”

The company's stock rose 9.2% on Tuesday following the announcement, which was paired with the company's quarterly earnings. Analysts at Citigroup called the earnings “disappointing” but said investors are looking past earnings to the company finally raising prices.

This week, Dollar Tree Inc., the parent meriter mychart login of the budget dollarstore com dollar tree Dollar Tree and Family Dollar, said it will close 390 Family Dollar stores in 2019. The news comes on the heels of the company trying to revamp these stores last year to make them more exciting for shoppers, but the closures signal how hard it is to turn around a struggling brand in today’s retail landscape.

Dollar Tree and Family Dollar are budget-friendly stores, known for selling groceries, accessories, and home goods at prices that start at $1 and don’t typically go dollarstore com dollar tree $10. The www walmart one com stores used to be rival discount chains, but in 2015, Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar for $8.5 billion. The acquisition gave Dollar Tree a total of 13,000 stores total, in the US and Canada, with about $19 billion in yearly revenue.

Folding these two companies together has not been easy, though, and analysts have said that Family Dollar has become more of a problem for Dollar Tree than a winning addition to its portfolio. With the announcement that it was closing almost 400 stores, the company reported a $2.3 billion loss.

This most recent round of closures is just another addition to the pileup of brands shuttering stores, filing for bankruptcy, and going out of business. Brick-and-mortar stores are struggling, as they fail to face off with online competitors, and are stuck with tons of stores that have high rent prices. Even discount retailers like Dollar Tree, once hailed as the antidote to Amazon, must figure out how to keep stores afloat.

    Why Dollar Tree is struggling

There are a handful of discount retailers in the US, including Dollar General, 99 Cents Only, and Five Below. But while fellow off-price retail stores like T.J. How many digits is a citizens bank account number and Marshall’s thrive on a chaotic environment, where stores are jam-packed with a sometimes disorganized array of discounted products, shoppers have pointed out that Dollar Tree and Family Dollar are often disappointing destinations. The chains are plagued with dollarstore com dollar tree shelves and messy stores.

Dollar stores have long been considered by retail analysts as able to compete with big box brands because of their additional discounts and their often-smaller stores. In the past few years, though, Walmart has been experimenting with smaller-store concepts. Walmart has also been aggressively trying to squeeze out its dollar-store competitors by lowering the costs of items like detergent and cereal.

Amazon, too, has had its eye on the dollar store space. Last year, it launched a new section on its site for products $10 and under. These “Bargain Finds” include electronics, home goods, clothes, and accessories — it’s all strikingly similar to what Dollar Tree sells. While e-commerce brands used to ignore products with such low margins, Amazon now offers free shipping on these items too, no doubt peoples natural gas pittsburgh phone number the incentive of indoctrinating budget shoppers and turning them into Amazon evangelists.

Both Walmart and Amazon have also been expanding their private-label products, as has Target. That means shoppers can now buy Amazon-brand toilet paper, Target-brand clothes, and Walmart-brand furniture, all of which come with a steep discount.

Dollar Tree was also hit hard by retail tariffs under President Donald Trump. According to Fortune, it imports 42 percent of its products from China, and the tariffs impacted 10 percent of the store’s inventory.

Dollar Tree isn’t the only budget brand that’s been hurting. In February, the discount shoe retailer Payless filed for bankruptcy for a second time, and announced it was closing all 2,500 stores it was operating in the US and Puerto Rico. Payless struggled with a bloated store portfolio, when a lot of its customers were flocking to online shopping. It also had a hard time competing with digital shoe sites like Amazon, as well as Amazon-owned Zappos and 6 PM.

The dollar store concept is still making money — Dollar Tree earned about $22 billion last year, as did its rival Dollar General. Many of these stores are in rural areas, where they can be the best option for customers who rely on deep discounts (although dollar stores are often criticized for hurting low-income neighborhoods, since they don’t stock fresh food and often put local stores out of business).

Dollar stores are particularly popular in distressed areas of the US, where the middle class is eroding. While some wealthy shoppers are turning to high-end destinations, many middle-and low-income shoppers are turning away from traditional department stores like Macy’s or Sears and opting for dollar stores instead.

Gary Philbin, the CEO of Dollar Tree, is keen on continuing to update its stores, in the hopes that it’ll find the right formula to face the competition. The company plans to renovate 1,000 stores and introduce new profit-friendly products like freezer food and alcohol.

Still, Dollar Tree has its work cut out for it, especially when it seems like Amazon and Walmart are rolling out new budget-friendly categories every day. As one finance blogger wrote, “instead of improving operations, Dollar Tree puts a new sign on the same-old building. Once inside, customers find the same employees, lousy service, and empty shelves. Obviously, such shenanigans can only sustain the company for so long.”

    The Only Way Is Essex
