One of the most commonly searched terms in personal finance is how to save money. Many of us enjoy using our credit cards to earn points, rewards, and travel miles but nobody is thrilled about paying an annual fee on your credit card. I’m here to show you step by step how the credit card annual fee was waived on my Citi AAdvantage card.
I hate fees. If you don’t hate fees personally I think there is something wrong with you. I do my best to avoid fees because in most cases I don’t think they should be part of doing business. I’m not against fees in some cases but if I can avoid them I will. While this article is about getting your annual fee credit card waived on your Citi AAdvantage credit card let’s start with the big picture first.
Many credit cards that offer a rewards program will often charge an annual fee. In my case I decided last year that my wife and I would be flying American Airlines as our primary airline out of Miami so it made sense for us to start accumulating American Airlines miles with a travel rewards credit card.
After some careful research I ended up with the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® and 65,000 bonus miles along with the $99 fee waived for the first year. Almost immediately after receiving my card I set up a Google calendar appointment to call and cancel my card and/or request to waive the fee the following year.
Then when my calendar alert reminded me I called into Citi card. A couple minutes later my fee was waived for the year.
The conversation sounded something like this:
Me: Hi I’m calling to cancel my Citibank AAdvantage card because I’m set to be charged the annual $99 fee.
Citi: Hi sir, I understand your frustration with fees. Would it help if I waived the $99 to keep you with us as a loyal customer?
Me: Yes citi aa visa card would indeed keep me as a loyal customer, thank you.
Citi: It’s my pleasure, your fee will be waived on your next statement.
Honestly this was one of the easiest and shortest phone calls I have made in regards to fees. I barely even made an ask before they were ready to waive the fee. It’s important to know that financial institutions value your business so they want to keep you around rather than have you go to a competitor.
Avoid Fees Money Saved: $99
Time Spent: 2-3 minutes
✅Action Step: If you have a credit card with an annual fee, look up the annual fee date and add this to your calendar so you can call and ask for the fee to be waived.
Everyone is looking for ways to save money and avoid fees. The script I used can be used in just about any company that charges a fee.
✅Action Step: Make the phone call. Followed by a simple ask: will you waive my fees? You might be surprised at how often it works. By taking less than 3 minutes of can i exchange gift cards for cash at safeway time I saved $99! Give it a try and let me know how you did.

I applied for this card despite Credit Karma saying my odds were not great. My TU Score was 681 and my Experian was 709, and I was approved with a credit limit of $8,500. I'm disappointed that it does not earn Elite Qualifying Dollars like the Aviator card does, but I am happy with the fact the annual fee is waived the first year and with the 60k bonus miles after the first $3,000 spent.

This was a 5 star card until September 22, 2019 when almost all benefits are going to be slashed by Citi. This card had soooo many benefits, car rental insurance, 90 day return protection, citi price rewind, baggage insurance protection, emergency travel protection, roadside assistance and more. all gone. I used to advocate for this card every time someone asked me for recommendations. now, I don't know. Citi always had my back for any charges of subscriptions or canceled services, they sometimes issue a credit right away. They're flexible and I've never had 1 complaint, until they slashed these rewards. For a cheap annual fee of $99 (which increased from $95) solely based on baggage fees, is worth it. It pays itself off if you travel 2 times a year or with others (their bags are free if they're on your booking) I always had peace of mind traveling, but now I feel vulnerable.

This was my go-to card for the last 2 years. I average $2k - $3k per month, never carrying a balance. My son is an authorized user, and buys food and gas. Same stations, same places for 2 years. On a very cold, blustery day, I am getting gas at a Sam’s club. Card declined. I used another card. I get a notice that they are looking at suspicious charges. $6 on Amazon, where I probably have 6 - 10 purchases per month. Gas at the station for $44 where my son always gets gas. An authorization at a Sam’s club. For the sake of $50, I took the card out of my wallet. It’s not my primary card any more.

This card/reward program out there. I actually feel ripped-off. I got the card for the reward miles obviously. Made the payment and purchases. Then the pandemic hits and they: 1. Took all my 60,000 reward miles 2. I literally could NOT talk to a human at American Airlines for an entire week as “the call volume was very high” and they “will have what time does pickup close at walmart customer care rep call you back in 2-4 hours”. Yes. Really. 3. Once someone called me back, they had no idea how to solve my issue, but wait, I will connect you with someone who can. Then, I got disconnected. 4. Repeat 1-3 again citi aa visa card. Caught some who dod look at my rewards and oop, nope. They expired. It’s a crap heap.

A good hsbc credit card login for miles if you use American Airlines. Earning miles for every purchase is nice, plus some perks for just being a cardholder. I personally don't use the card much because I get better perks from another card. For those that use AA a lot this card is a must.

Not happy with the rewards at all. I expected to earn miles. Even with flights I did not earn miles. Rediculous.

If you're an avid AA flyer this card is for you, the starting bonus of 60k is really nice and the miles can be used for upgrades or flights. The free checked bag is great and being in group 5 each time you fly once again its not bad but not great. $95 dollar annual fee as well, this card is honestly for the American Airlines avid traveler.

I've had this for over a year and this has definitely allowed me to get more and better credit cards. I also now have enough miles to get round trip to Australia for free.

I applied for this card strictly for the points. I have excellent credit (825+), no missed payments and a 2% utilization rate on other cards. I have no debt - car loans are paid and I've never carried a card balance. Regardless my application was declined. When I called to ask why they extremely rude and never answered me. I applied for a Capital One Venture card right after and was approved with a $20,000 limit. Forget Citi!!

This card is not worth it at all. You don't even get free checked bag on international flights. Like Mexico. America airlines sucks for this. This card gives you no status with America ether. I will be canceling my card, no reason to keep it.
