The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is the latest entry in the premium travel credit cards category, giving Capital One a high-annual-fee competitor to the likes of Chase and American Express.

Premium travel credit cards charge a high annual fee and in return provide a suite of travel rewards, often including points or miles, travel credits and other perks. Higher-than-average rewards rates and credits will quickly make up for the considerable annual fee and then some, but the onus is on you to take advantage of the card. If you don't, you'll find yourself spending hundreds of dollars each year in fees without a lot to show for it. Generally speaking, those who spend around $10,000 or more annually on airfare and hotels are best positioned for these cards.

The current frontrunners among premium travel rewards cards are the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express, which charge $550 and $695 in annual fees, respectively. The Capital One Venture X charges $395, with comparable rewards rates and bonuses. The main caveat for the Venture X is that cardholders need to book their travel through the Capital One Travel portal to earn the headline rates, although you do have the option to redeem rewards for any travel you book.

All in all, the Capital One Venture X offers a valuable combination of rewards. However, the card is still in its infancy, and several important features still haven't been launched, including a few final touches on the Capital One Travel portal and benefits like Capital One airport lounges (only one currently exists at Dallas-Fort Worth airport).

    Rates, rewards and bonuses

As a premium travel credit card, the Capital One Venture X's reward rates are in-line with what you'd expect -- which is to say, they're very high. Cardholders earn 5x miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel, 10x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2x miles on all other purchases. In general, miles are worth about 1 cent apiece, but there are methods to receive higher redemption rates detailed in the next section.

The welcome bonus offers 100,000 miles after spending $10,000 on purchases within the first six months. Comenity bank wayfair account $10,000 spending threshold is much higher than the American Express Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Capital One also gives cardholders 10,000 miles every year on their account anniversary, no questions asked, and up to a $300 annual travel statement credit, which can be applied toward travel bookings through Capital One Travel. (Notice a theme, yet? Capital One definitely wants cardholders doing all of their travel booking on the portal.) For a limited time, users will also receive up to a $200 vacation rental statement credit for any qualified lodging (excluding major hotel chains) charged to your account within the first year.

The 10,000-mile anniversary bonus alone is worth $100, so together with up to a $300 annual travel statement credit for bookings through Capital One Travel -- plus the limited-time up to $200 vacation rental statement credit in the first year -- you'll essentially already be compensated for the $395 annual fee.

Finally, Capital One Venture X cardholders get unlimited access to Capital One airport lounges (there are plans to invest in developing this program beyond the one lounge that exists now), complimentary membership to Priority Pass and its participating lounges, as well as up to a $100 credit on Global Entry or TSA PreCheck when you use your Venture X card to pay for the application fee.

    Redemption options

One of the ways to redeem miles is by applying them as a statement credit toward past travel purchases. Note that those travel purchases don't have to have been made through the Capital One Travel portal, giving you the freedom to book travel however you want. Another way what time does pickup close at walmart redeem miles is to use them to book new travel through the Capital One Travel portal. For both of these redemption options, 100 miles will be worth $1.

You can also redeem miles by transferring them to one of the 15+ Capital One travel partners, including airlines like British Airways, AirFrance-KLM and Etihad. Miles usually transfer at a rate of 1:1 (one Capital One mile equals one mile in the airline rewards program), and the value of the rewards program miles will vary. You can also redeem miles for gift cards, although these typically yield lower redemption values.

The Points Guy currently gives a value of 1.85 cents per Capital One mile based on how much they can potentially be worth when transferred strategically. But keep in mind that you typically get the highest monetary value from your miles when they're used to book business-class and first-class international flights. As usual, you'll need to put in a little extra time and research if you are determined to find the best value on flights -- a lot of factors can go into value differences. That being said, if your travel is more flexible and you like to use miles on expensive international flights, you can expect a value closer to 1.5 to 1.85 cents.

It's also worth noting that the Capital One travel partners don't include any US domestic airlines, though some partners -- like British Airways and Avianca -- do allow you to book on domestic airlines like American Airlines or Alaska Airlines through their rewards programs, depending on reward-seat availability.

    Booking travel through Capital One

The Capital One Travel booking tool is similar to any third-party booking platform, allowing you to search for fares across multiple airlines and hotel chains, with an easy-to-use interface. It also has similar pros and cons to any booking tool. You lose out on hotel rewards and may experience more complications than if you were to book directly with an airline if something unexpected comes up, but with the upside of easier bargain hunting and price comparisons.

Capital One has partnered with Hopper, an app that predicts when it's most affordable to book flights and hotels. The Hopper integration looks seamless and substantial, with clear notifications and tips on when it's best to book. According to The Points Guy, it's also planning to roll out two travel insurance features: cancel-for-any-reason coverage, which allows you to cancel your flight and receive most of the ticket price back, and price-freeze protection to lock in the current price for later purchase, for a fee. With the Capital One Venture X, you'll have access to these features when they're implemented through the portal.

How it compares to the competition

There are two cards that we think consumers should consider before signing up for the Capital One Venture X: The Platinum Card from American Express and the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

    The Platinum Card from Amex
The Platinum Card from American Express has a $695 annual fee, nearly double that of the Venture X. But if you spend $6,000 in purchases within your first six months of card membership, you earn 100,000 Membership Rewards® Points. According to The Points Guy, Amex Membership Rewards Points are worth 1 cent each when used to book flights through the American Express Travel, or a 0.6 cent cash-back redemption rate. By these measures, the Venture X has comparable welcome-bonus earnings to The Platinum Card, but is earned at a lower spending threshold, making it more accessible.

You'll also earn 10x points for the first six months on eligible restaurant purchases worldwide and when you Shop Small in the U.S., on up to $25,000 in combined purchases, as well as 5x points on flights booked with American Express Travel or directly with the airline (on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year). You can also earn 5x points on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel and 1x points on other purchases. Benefits also include up to a $179 annual statement credit for Clear, up to a $200 airline fee statement credit each calendar year at one select qualifying airline and up to $200 in Uber Cash annually on U.S. rides and eats (up to $15 per month, plus a bonus $20 in December).

Overall, if you're willing to book all your travel through American Express, the welcome bonus and rewards rates could be more worthwhile for some, but if you require flexibility for your travel booking, Capital One Venture X is a better option.

Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Enrollment may be required for select American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.

    Chase Sapphire Reserve
The Chase Sapphire Reserve has a $550 annual fee, a 50,000 point welcome bonus after spending $4,000 in the first three months from account opening (worth $750 of travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards) and offers up to a $300 annual travel statement credit. Cardholders also earn 5x points on flights booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, 10x on hotels and rental cars booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, and 3x points on other travel (earn elevated rewards on travel after you earn your $300 annual travel credit). Plus, earn 3x points on dining purchases and 1x points on all other purchases. Ultimate Rewards points are worth 1.5 cents apiece when redeemed toward travel purchases through Chase Capital 1 venture credit card Rewards, raising the floor value significantly without needing to strategically transfer the points (cash-back redemption is valued at 1 cent per point).

The Venture X welcome bonus is significantly higher, even considering the higher value of Ultimate Rewards points versus Capital One miles. But the substantial difference in their spending thresholds may make one more valuable to a consumer than the other. Otherwise, the Venture X reward rates and credits are comparable to the Sapphire Reserve. The main advantage of the Sapphire Reserve is the ability to get more value out of points simply by booking through the Chase portal.

Overall, the Capital One Venture X seems to have earned its seat at the premium travel table.

    FAQs

How do travel credit cards work?

Travel credit cards turn purchases into points or miles that can be redeemed for travel purchases, like flights and hotel stays. Sometimes you can redeem those points for cash or a gift card, but you typically get the best rate when using them to book travel. The top cards have their own travel booking portals through which you can find flights, hotels and rental cars; sometimes, points are worth more when used in those credit card company portals.

Airline credit cards and hotel credit cards operate like loyalty programs in that you stay in a closed-loop rewards system. You earn rewards when you purchase flights or hotels through your chosen airline or hotel company, and you can use those points for perks or future bookings through the same airline or hotel group.

How do you choose the best travel credit card?

The points and travel benefits that you accrue through a travel rewards program are often redeemed through your credit card issuer's website (or app) or appear as a statement credit that reimburses you for past travel-related and everyday purchases you made with your travel credit card. Points or miles can also be transferred to travel partners -- mostly hotels and airlines -- at a fluctuating conversion rate, where they can then be used to book a flight or hotel room.

To choose the best travel credit card, there are a few key factors to consider:

    • Annual fees: Most travel rewards programs have annual fees, with some climbing as high as $695, but those fees are usually mitigated by monthly or annual credits.
    • Exclusive perks: Some travel rewards card options also grant access to exclusive travel perks, like airline lounges, priority boarding or VIP welcomes at hotels. The value of those perks is subjective and something you'll have to evaluate based on your needs and wants.
    • Foreign transaction fees: The best travel cards don't make users pay a foreign transaction fee, so that's not something you have to worry about.

What extra benefits do travel credit cards usually offer?

Most travel credit cards -- which carry hefty annual fees -- include benefits that add additional value to those cards. Benefits like travel accident insurance, trip cancellation insurance, trip delay reimbursement or protection, lost luggage reimbursement and rental car collision insurance are typical.

7 reasons to get the Capital One Venture Rewards card

Editor’s note: This post has been updated with new information.

The world of points, miles and credit cards can be complex, full of potentially confusing terms and unfamiliar abbreviations. That’s what makes a card such as the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card such a precious commodity. Here’s why:

    • The simplicity of redeeming miles toward travel purchases at a flat 1 cent each can be a much-needed breath of fresh air.
    • Its valuable airline and hotel transfer partners are perfect for those who are more advanced with travel rewards.

With the many ways to use your card’s rewards that the Venture presents, booking free travel can be as complicated or effortless as you make it. Here are seven reasons why the Capital One Venture is one of the best rewards credit cards to have in your wallet.

New to The Points Guy? Want to learn more about credit card points and miles? Sign up for our daily newsletter.

    In This Post

    Strong sign-up bonus

The Capital One Venture card offers a sign-up bonus of 60,000 miles after you spend $3,000 on the card within the first three months of account opening.

If you plan to transfer your miles to hotel or airline partners, this sign-up bonus is worth around $1,110, according to our monthly valuations (not provided by issuers), since we peg Capital One miles at 1.85 cents each. Of course, it’s possible to get even more value from them depending on which transfer partners you leverage and which awards you book.

    Great for everyday spending

Many other credit cards offer bonus points on common purchase categories such as groceries, gas or restaurants. But what about purchases that don’t fall under one of these, such as online shopping, gym memberships or kitchen appliances?

The Capital One Venture earns an uncapped 2 miles per dollar on every purchase — that’s a 3.7% return on every dollar per TPG valuations (not provided by the issuer). That means there are no categories to keep track of and no bonuses to worry about missing out on.

Easy to redeem miles for travel purchases

The Capital One Venture allows you to redeem your miles at a fixed value toward travel charges. This means you can effectively “erase” eligible travel purchases made in the last 90 days by redeeming your miles at a rate of 1 cent each.

There’s no minimum redemption amount, either (unless you don’t have enough miles to cover the entire purchase, in which case the minimum is 2,500 miles). Let’s say you book a domestic award ticket and pay the $5.60 in taxes with your card. You can use 560 miles — as each mile is worth 1 cent — to cover this small purchase.

Capital One makes it easy to redeem your miles this way. You can either do so directly when booking through the Capital One Travel portal by selecting miles as your payment option, or you can simply purchase travel with your credit card – an airline ticket or a hotel reservation, for instance – then log into your account afterward and select the option to cash them in as a statement credit against the charge.

Great airline and hotel transfer partners

You can squeeze more value out of your Capital One miles by transferring them to any of the following 14 airline or three hotel partners. All of your Capital One miles will transfer at a simple 1:1 rate, with the exception of two partners (as noted below):

    • Accor Live Limitless (2:1)
    • Aeromexico Club Premier
    • Air Canada Aeroplan
    • Air France-KLM Flying Blue
    • Avianca LifeMiles
    • British Airways Avios
    • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
    • Choice Privileges (coming later in 2021)
    • Emirates Skywards
    • Etihad Guest
    • EVA Infinity MileageLands (2:1.5)
    • Finnair Plus
    • Qantas Frequent Flyer
    • Singapore KrisFlyer
    • TAP Air Portugal Miles & Go
    • Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles
    • Wyndham Rewards

Capital One offers one of the most diverse transferable points programs around. You have airlines covering all three major alliances and several non-alliance airlines, such as Etihad and Emirates. Some of these options (like Finnair) are unique to Capital One, too.

You also have great variety among the programs themselves. For example:

    • Cathay Pacific and Qantas use distance-based award charts, which are generally better for short flights.
    • Avianca uses zone-based award charts and is suitable for booking inexpensive premium-cabin Star Alliance awards.
    • Air France and KLM use variable pricing instead of firm award charts. It’s possible to find great deals, particularly with specially priced Promo Rewards.

Convert cash back from other Capital One cards into Venture miles

You can convert Capital One cash back into miles if you also have a Capital One miles-earning card. For example, you can turn the cash back you earn with the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card into miles if you’ve also got the Capital One Venture. That means you can take advantage of the Savor’s bonus earning categories, including dining and groceries, to rack up lots of extra rewards you can convert into Capital One Venture miles and then transfer to the program’s airline and hotel partners.

The information for the Capital One Savor card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

    Valuable ongoing perks

Although the Capital One Venture card isn’t actively competing with benefits provided by ultra-premium cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve or The Platinum Card® from American Express, it does offer some modest perks:

*These benefits are only available to accounts approved for the Visa Signature card. Terms apply.

Capital One has also officially opened its first-ever airport lounge at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) Terminal D.

Folks with the new Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card get unlimited access for themselves and up to two guests, but Venture Rewards cardholders aren’t entirely left out. You’ll receive two complimentary lounge visits annually and will have access to a special entry rate of $45 per visit after that. Pricing for guests is also $45 per visit.

    Reasonable annual fee

The Capital One Venture card only charges a $95 annual fee, which is a low cost for such a potentially valuable capital 1 venture credit card. It’s easy to offset the annual fee’s price between the easy-to-use earning structure, a simple redemption process, a diverse set of transfer partners and other perks.

    Bottom line

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a great hybrid credit card that’s a strong candidate for an all-in-one card if you don’t want a wallet full of plastic (or metal, as the case may be).

Not only do you accumulate 2 miles per dollar on every purchase, but you also can keep things simple and flexible by redeeming your miles for the travel purchases you put on the card. If you decide to study award charts and look for sweet spots instead, you’ll have lots of airline and hotel programs to choose from in the Capital One transfer partner lineup. That’s what makes the Venture so special — it lets cardholders earn miles fast and then use them in myriad ways for outsized value. All that and more is why the card deserves a place in your wallet.

Deal of the Month: Capital One Venture X

    Credit-Cards-Capital-One-Venture-X

    Jason Steele

The market for ultra-premium travel rewards credit cards is hot, to say the least. Capital One recently introduced its long-anticipated entry to this market, and it doesn’t disappoint. It includes a very strong welcome offer, double miles for all purchases, and some class-leading benefits. And it does all of this at a price point below many competing cards.

Talk to a Credit Repair Expert

    How this new offer works

New applicants can earn 100,000 bonus miles after spending $10,000 within six months of account opening. You also receive unlimited double miles on all purchases, plus another 10,000 bonus miles each year on your account anniversary. You can also earn 10x Miles on hotels and rental car purchases booked through Capital One Travel, and 5x Miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel.

These Capital One Miles can now be transferred at a 1:1 ratio to frequent flyer miles or hotel points with more than 15 loyalty programs. You can also redeem your Capital One Miles for one cent each as statement credits towards any travel purchase.

Other features include a $300 annual travel credit that you can use at Capital One Travel, and a limited time offer for $200 of vacation rental credit within your account’s first year.

Benefits include a Priority Pass Select membership that offers you and two guests access to over 1,000 airport lounges worldwide. Then, there’s the new Capital One Lounges that are being created. The first one in the Dallas-Fort Worth airport is already open, and Capital One has announced that it will open lounges in Denver International and Washington Dulles airports in 2022. Furthermore, you can add free additional cardholders who also receive the same lounge access.

There’s a $395 annual fee for this card, and no foreign transaction fees.

    What makes this card special

The Capital One Venture X is currently the only premium travel rewards card that offer double miles on all purchases. It’s also the only one in its class that offers free cards to additional authorized cardholders that includes the Priority Pass Select lounge membership. Also, it’s the only card that offers rewards that can be transferred to airline and hotel programs, or redeemed for travel statement credits. This kind of program works for everyone from award travel newbies to hard-core fanatics, and gives you maximum flexibility.

And while the $395 annual fee sounds expensive, this card is in the same class as the $550 Chase Sapphire Reserve and the $695 American Express Platinum, by that metric it’s a good deal. Once you spend the $300 annual travel credit, you’re looking at a net annual fee of just $95. Take advantage of the $200 vacation rental credit, and you’ll come out ahead. And that’s before you look at the 100,000 mile new account bonus, worth $1,000 in travel statement credits.

    Bottom Line

Capital One was certainly not the first card issuer to offer a product in this category, but now that it’s here, it’s definitely one of the strongest. By offering double miles on all purchases and strong benefits at a competitive price, the new Venture X has everything it takes to be our Deal of the Month.

Miles can not be redeemed for cash back.

    Our Verdict

This is the rumored card we mentioned a few weeks ago, and the card is now live. This card is an enhanced version of the Venture Miles cards with with $300 higher annual fee, and coming with a $300 booking credit, 10,000 miles annual bonus, and many premium benefits. It’s certainly interesting for the signup bonus of 100,000 miles, especially now with the limited-time $200 vacation rental credit.

Beyond the signup bonus: someone who already has Priority Pass access might not find this card much more interesting than the regular Venture card. Even then, most travelers will find it worth the extra $300 which gets you a $300 booking credit, 10,000 anniversary miles, primary car rental coverage, 10x multiplier on hotel/car bookings, authorized user lounge access, and access to Capital One lounges.

Capital One isn’t always easy to get approved with, though for this card, specifically, I’m seeing like 50-50 approvals by readers so it seems they are approving easier for this card. Also note that the card is available for product changes; you won’t get the signup bonus, but it’s an option if you were declined. Check out these Things to Know about Capital One Credit Cards before applying.

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card 2022 Review – Effortless Travel Rewards And Redemptions

    Earning Rewards

The Venture card earns 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and an unlimited 2 miles per dollar spent on other purchases, placing it well on the high-earning end of flat-rate reward cards. It has no categories or other earning benefits beyond its welcome bonus.

The card has a welcome offer: 60,000 miles after spending $3,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening.

    Redeeming Rewards

Reward redemption with the Venture card is, for most customers, going to be limited to travel rewards. Redemption of miles via purchases on Paypal.com and Amazon.com are possible, but generally these won’t earn the best value. Typically, miles redemptions for purchases on these sites will only earn 0.8 cents per dollar over the 1 cent per dollar earned on eligible travel redemptions.

One great benefit  of Capital One Miles have is the ability to transfer miles to member programs. As of April 20, 2021, Capital One refreshed and improved its miles transfer program, adding additional partners and increasing the transfer ratio for several existing partners.

Often, the best redemption values can be made through miles transfers, but these redemptions will also require significantly more work than redeeming points for previous travel.

Tip: Purchasing travel on the card and then redeeming miles to “erase” your purchase is a smarter money move than just making a booking using miles. This way, you’ll both earn miles on the reservation and get to use your accumulated earnings to offset the purchase.

    Rewards Potential

To determine the rewards potential of the Venture card we have to look at the bonus categories and calculate what an example American household might spend in those areas. Forbes Advisor uses data from various government agencies in order to determine both baseline income and spending averages across various categories. The 70th percentile of wage-earning households bring in $100,172 annually and we base spending on that number.

Forbes Advisor estimates that the household has $26,410 in expenses that can be reasonably charged to a credit card. At 2 miles per dollar spent, the Venture would earn 52,820 miles per year in addition to the first-year welcome bonus. These miles can be redeemed for $528.20 in value toward travel purchases by using miles for eligible travel, or transferred to Capital One’s partners.

    • This flexible rewards card delivers a solid sign-up bonus of 60,000 miles, valued by TPG at $1,020.
    • You'll earn 2x on every purchase, which means you won't have to worry about memorizing bonus categories.
    • Rewards earned are versatile as they can be redeemed for any hotel or airline purchase for a statement credit or transferred to 15+ travel partners.
    • Transfer ratios to most partners are mediocre at less than 1:1 ratio.
    • Capital One airline partners do not include any large U.S. airlines.
